Great discussion from @schneiderhome + @ZackPolanski (deep, serious engagement with reasoned difference). Those who believe in a more equal and democratic society have begun the task of working out how to come together as a political force. It will need the many, not the few.
James Schneider@schneiderhome

Yes, we do need a new party to take from the rich to give to us all. But it needs to be a new kind of party. I argue how and why here 👇 novaramedia.com/2025/02/21/the…

This message undermines the political neutrality of the police. That the message still stands, and that there hasn’t been a robust response to it across the political spectrum, shows that UK democracy is fragile and under attack.
Metropolitan Police@metpoliceuk

“Apprehending violent and dangerous criminals is a full contact and messy task which may appear shocking to observers with little experience of policing in the real world.” Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley writes to Zack Polanski.

@AaronBastani STV is far worse. There is a reason most of Europe, and majority of non-FPTP democracies, use open and closed list systems. The mistake Wales made was that the number of units available in each region was too small. Proportionality increases as the number of units increase.

Can anyone give me one example of when @Keir_Starmer has lied? Not an opinion; not your opinion being at odds with his opinion; a straight up bang-to-rights lie that he told that has subsequently been proven to be a lie? No, I didn’t think so. I don’t think he’s capable of lying.

To get a single piece of New Democratic Settlement legislation passed we will need: More than three hundred representatives ready to legislate it. Hundreds of thousands willing to campaign for it. Millions of voters heading to vote for it.

It cannot be said enough that the last Labour leadership contest was clearly won through deception. Let’s start here. How was that allowed to happen? When it became clear why wasn’t that contest seen as illegitimate? And how did that same candidate end up as PM?
Zack Polanski@ZackPolanski

There's no way today should end without Starmers resignation. Any other outcome would an absurd scenario where this Labour Government - and all in it - would be laughing in our faces.

This is exciting. A vision for a fairer economy and a New Democratic Settlement can win the next election. Sound redistributive economics, smart cost-of-living policy, regulating and reforming political & information systems, are all essential to meet 21st century challenges.

Thinktank @VerdantThinking launches today - our first report is in the Guardian: "A “Doge of the left,” could save up to £30bn a year for taxpayers by rooting out waste, fraud and tax avoidance, according to the first report from a new green thinktank.." (Link below...)

I find this unconvincing. Why? I am still not sure what the Green Party policy on drugs is. The evidence-base is alluded to but not provided. Case studies like Portugal are not being explained or presented in detail.
Carla Denyer@carla_denyer

Labour have been smearing the Greens on our evidenced-based approach to drugs. If the PM won’t listen to us, and he won’t listen to the experts, will he listen to the families at @anyoneschild, who have lost loved ones under the UK’s current negligent drug policies?

@AaronBastani They’ve begun to make missteps. However, the result in Gorton and Denton (Wales too) is hard to square with a party on 23% nationally. It’s worth comparing local vote shares with the Tories (19), as well as looking at constituencies that historically are Labour/Tory marginals.

I’m honestly surprised Reform aren’t having more self-examination right now. They built a powerful political brand - but over the last 6 months I’ve just seen them whinging and moaning. That was basically their campaign in Gorton and Denton, and the response. Losers whinge.

@SaulStaniforth It’s extraordinary that Labour MPs decided to undermine their own credibility in the way they have. A culture that rewards obedience over truth-telling turns people into cogs in a machine. This kind of loyalty to a brand is a betrayal of the thinking self.

Labour are sticking with the line that only Labour can stop Reform. Unbelievable, you might say, given the results in Caerphilly and now Gorton & Denton. So why are they doing it? Because they've got nothing else.

I joined the @TheGreenParty last year. Open selection processes are a triumph and give the party a bright future. @ZackPolanski is a superb communicator. But, in its current form, the party is neither ready for government or the size of its membership: dodo-levin.medium.com/ready-for-gove…
Joseph-Dodo Levin@JDLevin88

I have written a piece about how @TheGreenParty can begin preparing for government. In this piece I suggest the party should: 1. Upgrade Systems of Thinking 2. @TheGreenParty An amazing win. It's time to raise this, just this week I was unable to attend a Green Party local meeting because the in-person event had reached capacity. The Green Party structure is inadequate for the size of its membership and its ultimate goal: dodo-levin.medium.com/ready-for-gove…

@KevinASchofield Supporting First Past the Post and then using made up or distorted tactical voting information in an effort to win an election is a form of cheating. There should be consequences to these attacks on democratic standards.

NEW: Labour embroiled in dirty tricks row on eve of Gorton and Denton by-election. The party has put out a leaflet saying "Tactical Choice" say voters should back them to beat Reform. Only, Tactical Choice don't appear to exist. Story 👇 huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/labour-a…

I hope, whatever the result this week, a critique of our broken electoral system is heard loudly. Losing voters, which will likely make up 60% of all who voted, will receive no representation. I am waiting for a leader to say: we will treat our political opponents fairly.
Jessica Elgot@jessicaelgot

MPs in Gorton and Denton this week all basically saying very different things, one saying they are sure that Reform will win, two more saying Labour could, another saying it’s turned into a Labour- Green battle. Polls showing Greens ahead. All sees v tight…

Democracy should be about the contest of ideas not the trading of bar graphs with voting percentages. I want the @TheGreenParty to win but the system has to be changed. Commentary on the race has replaced inspection of policy. This is not a functioning democracy.

Even if this were the case, a political party that does not support proportional representation should not be rewarded with tactical votes. No policy on PR: no tactical votes. This should be the foundational understanding of any alliance against Reform.
Lucy Powell MP@LucyMPowell

Gorton & Denton is a constituency of two halves. After thousands and thousands of conversations, the story is clear: only Labour has the breadth & depth to beat Reform. Voters are increasingly recognising that. See the whole picture 👇
