So, the precedent has been set: high ranking police or army officials can now influence elections by calling out politicians directly in the lead up to voting. What a disaster for democratic standards in the UK. Where are the MPs who will speak in defence of democratic norms?

BREAKING: Greens leader Zack Polanski responds to critcisms from Met Police commissioner Mark Rowley: "‘Everyone in leadership has a responsibility for lowering the temperature at a time of such tension, and I apologise for sharing a tweet in haste. Police responses to emergency situations such as these do need later reflection in the right forums, but I accept that social media is not the appropriate channel for doing so. This message undermines the political neutrality of the police. That the message still stands, and that there hasn’t been a robust response to it across the political spectrum, shows that UK democracy is fragile and under attack.

@AaronBastani STV is far worse. There is a reason most of Europe, and majority of non-FPTP democracies, use open and closed list systems. The mistake Wales made was that the number of units available in each region was too small. Proportionality increases as the number of units increase.

The question that the media refuse to ask: did the Labour leadership knowingly mislead the electorate by not including some policy intentions in the Labour manifesto? MPs are apparently protected from being misled in Parliament, what protects the public from such dishonesty?

NEW: Keir Starmer unknowingly misled Parliament, his spokesman appears to admit. “The prime minister would never knowingly mislead Parliament or the public. He's clear, though, that this information should have been provided to Parliament. It should have been provided to him, it should have been provided to other government ministers.. “But he clearly did not have this information - that is the crucial fact - he clearly did not have this information when he previously spoke to Parliament.”

It cannot be said enough that the last Labour leadership contest was clearly won through deception. Let’s start here. How was that allowed to happen? When it became clear why wasn’t that contest seen as illegitimate? And how did that same candidate end up as PM?

I find this unconvincing. Why? I am still not sure what the Green Party policy on drugs is. The evidence-base is alluded to but not provided. Case studies like Portugal are not being explained or presented in detail.

@AaronBastani They’ve begun to make missteps. However, the result in Gorton and Denton (Wales too) is hard to square with a party on 23% nationally. It’s worth comparing local vote shares with the Tories (19), as well as looking at constituencies that historically are Labour/Tory marginals.

I’m honestly surprised Reform aren’t having more self-examination right now. They built a powerful political brand - but over the last 6 months I’ve just seen them whinging and moaning. That was basically their campaign in Gorton and Denton, and the response. Losers whinge.

It is also the lowest we have had Labour. In terms of how meaningful this is, it is obviously likely driven to a significant extent by the publicity from the Denton & Gorton by-election, as well as any impact it has from the Greens appearing a more viable option and less of a wasted vote. It remains to be seen to what extent it sticks, or whether it fades again as the immediate publicity boost recedes. Sunday/Monday

I hope, whatever the result this week, a critique of our broken electoral system is heard loudly. Losing voters, which will likely make up 60% of all who voted, will receive no representation. I am waiting for a leader to say: we will treat our political opponents fairly.

Democracy should be about the contest of ideas not the trading of bar graphs with voting percentages. I want the @TheGreenParty to win but the system has to be changed. Commentary on the race has replaced inspection of policy. This is not a functioning democracy.

Even if this were the case, a political party that does not support proportional representation should not be rewarded with tactical votes. No policy on PR: no tactical votes. This should be the foundational understanding of any alliance against Reform.
