Lovely piece in The JC by Gaby Koppel, one of our trustees, about her memories of Michael Moritz as a young man in Cardiff. His new memoir, Ausländer, has just been published and we get a credit for the research we did for it. Which is nice. thejc.com/life/my-youth-…

Josef Herman (1911–2000) was a realist artist renowned for his sketches and paintings of working people. Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1911, Herman was among several Jewish artists who fled Eastern Europe to escape Nazi persecution. In 1938, he became a refugee and traveled to Britain. Tragically, in 1942, he learned that his entire family had been lost in the Holocaust. In 1944, Herman visited Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley. What began as a holiday turned into an eleven-year stay. Reflecting on this, he said, "I stayed here because I found all I required. I arrived here a stranger for a fortnight; the fortnight became 11 years." Herman became an integral part of the local community, where he was affectionately nicknamed 'Joe Bach.' The strong sense of community in Ystradgynlais, particularly the miners, deeply inspired Herman and featured prominently in his artwork. If you'd like to learn more about Josef Herman, we recommend exploring this collection. 🔗 bit.ly/JosefHermanCol… For educators, this teaching resource delves into the life and work of Josef Herman. 🔗 bit.ly/TheHolocaustan… Via @JHASW2018 / Dictionary of Welsh Biography
