May is Jewish History Month and we're shining the spotlight on the Montefiore Institute Synagogue!
Originally built in 1916, the Montefiore Institute was a place of worship, a social center and a school. It also had a lending library with over a thousand books!

May is Canadian #JewishHeritageMonth! Officially recognized in 2018 by Parliament, this month celebrates the inspirational role that Jewish Canadians have played in forming the fabric of Canadian society in the past, as well as the contributions of Jewish Canadians today.

The 1933 “Midnight Frolic,” an annual Jewish fundraiser in #YYC, took place #90YearsAgoToday at the Palace Theatre (extant at 219–8 Av SW). Participants enjoyed “two really good pictures, a Mickey Mouse cartoon, a snappy step number,” & prizes. #CanadianJewishHeritageMonth

In 1912, George E. Robbins (né Gedalyahu Rabinovici) had a front row spot at the 1st #YYC Stampede Parade. His twin daughters recognized him in an enlargement of this photo at the 2005 Stampede. Dr. Robbins died #OTD in 1973. #JewishHeritageMonth

#100YearsAgoToday, hundreds of #YYC Jews greeted 11 newcomers from Gomel, USSR (now Belarus). They were the last of a group of 32 relatives of city Jews brought by Harry Isenstein (1891–1982). Isenstein later lived at 324–12 Av SE, a #VictoriaPark landmark known as RockCentral.

Hundreds of celebrities bought western wear at Western Outfitters, which Phil & Lou Pomerance reopened at 128–8 Av SE (future @CTCC_Calgary site) #50YearsAgoToday. Their Dad, Isadore started the business in 1938. Many celebs left signed photos that hung on the walls. Closed 1996.
