#OTD in 1983, Mayor Klein & Israeli Consul Gideon Saguy joined 250 at #YYC’s JCC for the dual naming of 16 St SW as Jerusalem Rd. One speaker, Osman Tabish, said the naming was “very noble in meaning” but wished city Arabs had also been involved. #CanadianJewishHeritageMonth

May is Jewish History Month and we're shining the spotlight on the Montefiore Institute Synagogue! Originally built in 1916, the Montefiore Institute was a place of worship, a social center and a school. It also had a lending library with over a thousand books! #heritageparkyyc

May is Canadian #JewishHeritageMonth! Officially recognized in 2018 by Parliament, this month celebrates the inspirational role that Jewish Canadians have played in forming the fabric of Canadian society in the past, as well as the contributions of Jewish Canadians today.

The 1933 “Midnight Frolic,” an annual Jewish fundraiser in #YYC, took place #90YearsAgoToday at the Palace Theatre (extant at 219–8 Av SW). Participants enjoyed “two really good pictures, a Mickey Mouse cartoon, a snappy step number,” & prizes. #CanadianJewishHeritageMonth

#100YearsAgoToday, hundreds of #YYC Jews greeted 11 newcomers from Gomel, USSR (now Belarus). They were the last of a group of 32 relatives of city Jews brought by Harry Isenstein (1891–1982). Isenstein later lived at 324–12 Av SE, a #VictoriaPark landmark known as RockCentral.

It is an affront to all Albertans, especially the Jewish community that @AlbertaEd has effectively erasing Keegstra’s criminal conviction for hate speech. @JHSSACalgary @Jewishcalgary @harry_historian @AuschwitzMuseum @DShepYEG @albertateachers

Educator &human rights champion @DarrenELund is no longer with us but as a former student, I’m certain he’d have been outraged by both the registry in this form & the omission of Keegstra. @albertateachers #abpoli #ableg

Hundreds of celebrities bought western wear at Western Outfitters, which Phil & Lou Pomerance reopened at 128–8 Av SE (future @CTCC_Calgary site) #50YearsAgoToday. Their Dad, Isadore started the business in 1938. Many celebs left signed photos that hung on the walls. Closed 1996.
