I'm so sorry to hear that @rossjanderson is no longer with us. I grew up next door to him in Scotland and he has been a tower of strength for me as I found my feet here in Cambridge. One of those people whose quiet kindness will still be with me, long after he himself is gone.

@camcycle @PhilRodgers @CUH_NHS I think it would be good for them to rethink this now. The GP surgeries are under such pressure still, and the social distancing is no longer such an issue.

@PhilRodgers @CUH_NHS One of our members raised this last year, asking "Maybe it was different when they set these test centres up, but none of us was vaccinated then. The level of risk is so much lower now. Why are they not more responsive to the needs of local people?" camcycle.org.uk/magazine/magaz…

I've been contacted by someone wondering why the @CUH_NHS Newmarket Road blood testing service only allows drive-throughs, but not people walking or cycling in. Does anyone know more about this cuh.nhs.uk/our-services/o… says "safety reasons" but not what they are. @camcycle

@PhilRodgers @GreaterCambs If it made the parking situation better in our street, it might mean that kids could play out again. That would be great.

Here is a zoomable map of the proposed Cambridge congestion charge zone. This is an unofficial map made by me based on the lower-res map published by @GreaterCambs. If implemented, driving a car anywhere in this zone 7am-7pm Mon-Fri would cost £5 per day. google.com/maps/d/edit?mi…

Usually, it's the plant, adorn in flowers, that stops you to have a closer look, but in this case I enjoyed the closeup beauty of just a single flower. In this case the flower is Hibiscus syriacus (rose of sharon), commonly grown, but still beautiful, even just one.

@TheBotanics @VisitScotland That picture is really strange. There are hands holding the books, but there doesn't seem to be space behind the yello wooden hand for the body of the person to be concealed, as it doesn't show through the heart-shaped hole. What is going on there?

@RestIsPolitics What is going to happen with the no confidence vote tomorrow if a lot of people vote in favour of Boris Johnson? Might we end up stuck with him as Prime Minister again?

@rellanalvarez I was wondering that as I wrote it. They are very well wrapped anyway aren't they, whereas Dahlias really aren't. Maybe nature has it covered with Maize, both literally and figuratively. :-)

@rellanalvarez Thanks, that's great. We used to have to do that with snapdragons during my PhD. I was thinking maybe you were doing it like they do with Dahlias to make the cobs look especially beautiful for shows. :-)

@PhilRodgers Nice! Taken a weight off my mind to see some actual rational sounding speech from one or two of them.

@rellanalvarez Oh good! I don't. Mostly actually I would rather put bags over the male parts to stop the hayfever, but I probably better not as it will really not help with pollination. :-)

@LNethsingha Is it the very tall old ones that were used to make the masts of ocean-going sail ships? When I was an undergraduate botany student at Glasgow we were taken to see a field of oak trees that had had their main trunk harvested for a mast. The remaining tree was a very funny shape.

Update: it is making these lovely pale orange flowers with fused petals. And the flowers ooze sweet nectar!

@VenetiaJane Thanks, yes, and my fern work seems to go best if I let it develop over geological time. Rushing a fern has never worked for me.

The magical fern is said to bloom once every year at precisely midnight on 23rd June, #Midsummer Eve. #Fairies and #demons engage in fierce combat for the possession of seed from these enchanted flowers, which give them the power to render themselves invisible. #FolkloreThursday
