At the @CambridgeRadio studios where I'll be talking to Steffi Callister at about 5:30 about today's non-decision on new councils for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Several Cambridgeshire & Peterborough MPs are asking questions in the commons about the delay to LGR plans - among them @BenObeseJecty asked what was the reason for the delay; Steve Reed replied that he was "not satisfied that the information available was sufficient".

A few moments ago in the Commons, Secretary of State Steve Reed said that it is still the government's intention that elections to the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough councils will go ahead in May next year, with the councils taking over in April 2028. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@PhilRodgers @Rrrrooster I don’t know the projections, but I can’t imagine that a city full of students and academics will end up with anything other than Lib Dems or Labour or Greens, and none of them will remove the barrier.

Get this ugly, ridiculous piece of security theatre off our streets. That chain wouldn’t stop a bicycle thief, let alone a terrorist attack. It’s all the more ludicrous because the other end of King’s Parade is defended by plain old bollards, which is what we should have here.

@1WorldExplained @Rrrrooster Often this would be true, but local government reorganisation means that Cambridge is virtually certain to have new political leadership within two years.

@JanetOKeefe @BenObeseJecty I am sure some people will be pretty cross about it. But I have to say I doubt there will be crowds in the streets armed with torches and pitchforks chanting "We demand a rethink on local government reorganisation!"

@PhilRodgers @lornadupre @AnnaClarke_____ Very much hope that I am being wound up Phil, but Lib Dem MPs have heard similar from their sources and council executives have also heard these leaks. I struggle to see how Mid-Cambridgeshire would be a viable unitary authority.

@AnnaClarke_____ @PhilRodgers @BenObeseJecty Yes, it would. (Bear in mind that this is all rumour and speculation at this point.) It would be highly economically disadvantaged, and would have no obvious anchor settlement—Peterborough and Cambridge having been assigned elsewhere. It would be financially very unstable.

@sparky300 @BenObeseJecty There's a slightly better map here - samcarling.org/2025/07/18/53/ - it looks like Peterborough gets: Alconbury Brampton Huntingdon East Huntingdon North Kimbolton Sawtry Stilton, Folksworth & Washingley The Stukeleys Yaxley and the rest go with Fenland and East Cambs.

And yet instead of being “clearly dangerous” the suspect has been released and is no longer part of the investigation. A reminder of the importance of the presumption of innocence, which Keir Starmer clearly forgot about in this interview, despite all his legal training.
