I wouldn’t classify the parents of a 1 or 2 sport athlete that plays travel during the summer or in lieu of traditional local leagues as fitting this criteria. IMO: It’s the showcase/camp/year round circuit that either bleeds people dry and/or elevates the slim population that can play at a level that justifies the investment that warrants further discussion

@MattGlassman312 @rorycooper @JJHunt10 Spot on. Not every parent of club soccer/travel ball is trying to get their kid to college on it. If you want to simply make your High School team you need to be playing club at a pretty competitive level. But these coaches also are selling dreams. It’s an industry now.

@rorycooper @MattGlassman312 I can make exceptions for this convo! The lack of “normal” options is extremely disappointing. I also think there’s a massive difference between programs that spark competitive drive and bring enjoyment and the “D1 industrial complex” that you see in some of these stories

@rorycooper I think it’s all about expectations and desire. Is it for mostly enjoyment and a reasonable amount of time? For sure. I see this as more of an issue with year round travel programs and simply wish we’d reemphasize team school sports among 14-18 year olds.

@JJHunt10 I have a different take. Yes it’s gotten out of control. Especially bats. But I also think it’s not as simple and some parents want their kids to be active, make friends, learn work/failure and it’s is worth a birthday or Xmas present to encourage them, knowing the odds.

The first big spend comes from Leading the Future, a super PAC backed by artificial intelligence companies that raised more than $125M last year. The group is spending $500,000 to back Clay Fuller. #gapol ajc.com/politics/2026/…

Like Tiger at Augusta or Nadal at Roland Garros There’s no more perfect setting for Jmart to do his thing
Jonathan Martin@jmart

youtube.com/playlist?list=… FOLKS… The texts, emails and calls come regularly. At least once a week. Sometimes more. “Jmart, I’m going to [fill-in-the-blank city], where should I eat?” friends, colleagues and sometimes folks I barely know at all will ask. Often, the question in reference is about New Orleans, America’s greatest city and the town my wife, Betsy, and I call home. But just as frequently, it’s about somewhere else, where there’s a conference or wedding or news event. I’ve yet to meet the person who doesn’t want to find a good meal on the road. Which is why this week I’m starting “On the Road with Jonathan Martin.” After over 20 years of covering politics and visiting all 50 states along the way, I’ve eaten a lot of meals with politicians and those around them. Now I want to take you with me, have you watch and listen as I sit down and (quite literally) break bread at local joints with Democrats and Republicans alike. My vision: Anthony Bourdain meets “Lunch with the FT” meets the Almanac of American Politics. We’ll talk food, politics and place, delving into yesterday and tomorrow. It’s the great question at the heart of every political story, and it couldn’t be more relevant in America’s 250th year: How did we get here, and where are we going? We begin at Wright’s BBQ in Little Rock, Arkansas, where I had the ribs (great rub), brisket and mac and cheese last week with Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders. More on that below. I’m headed to California next, where I’ll dip into some Dungeness crab with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

News: The pro-AI super PAC Leading the Future tells me it plans to spend over $1 million in the Texas primary runoffs backing Jace Yarbrough in #TX32 and Tom Sell in #TX19. The group’s also keeping open the possibility it could get involved in other runoffs.

@greg_price11 Keep in mind, most of the people outraged by beer-fueled chuckles after a big win hate hockey, don’t follow the men’s team and certainly don’t bother with the women’s team for any reason other than to pursue an ideological agenda predicated on perceived marginalization.

You mean to tell me it turns out that the U.S. men's and women's hockey teams have a great relationship with each other and a lot of freakish pronoun people are creating a scandal out of nothing because it's their solemn duty to suck the joy out of every room.
SportsCenter@SportsCenter

USA women's hockey gold medalist @HilaryKnight describes her team's relationship with the USA men's team as one with a "genuine level of support and respect" that's being overshadowed by a "quick lapse." "Our achievements shouldn't be overshadowed by anything else other than how great they are."

You can tell many journalists never participated in high school athletics. Certainly not collegiate athletics. Because they don’t understand the dynamic at all. Men’s and women’s teams are incredibly supportive of each other. In college even more so when the social bubble is very tight. You attend each other’s games, workout in the same athletic complex, and mingle with the same people during down time. Outside of their family, friends, and industry insiders, there may be no bigger supporters of the women’s hockey team than the men’s team.

This is why I get so annoyed at the dumb conservatives who denigrate “sports ball” or whatever. Sports are a fundamental part of culture, just like art. You can’t pretend that you want to preserve American culture while at the same time totally dismissing these elements of culture. You don’t have to be a fan of any particular sport, but to write off the whole thing as beneath you just makes you a pretentious dork at best, or a nihilist at worst. Or both.
Jesse Kelly@JesseKellyDC

Sports do matter. They have always mattered for every society. That’s why every society has had them. The reason patriots have lamented the communist infiltration of sports is because it creates division instead of unity. And unity is the point of sports.
