I'm pleased to announce that my essay on Bindon Abbey in Dorset and its relationship with local society in the early fourteenth century has won the Mansel-Pleydell Essay Competition, awarded by the Mansel-Pleydell & Cecil Memorial Trust.

@DrFrancisYoung A rare Bindon Abbey mention! However, the abbey was never returned to the cistercians and the monks from La Trappe made a new monastery, halfway between East Lulworth and the coast. Since known as Monastery Farm.

I hadn't realised that Bindon Abbey in Dorset was the first English house to be returned to the Cistercian Order - in the 1790s when the Welds gave it to the refugee monks of La Trappe. Sounds like it was a fun place to be

The extent to which data is exportable from @UkNatArchives, plus their open design assets, is amazing. Here, I'm using the data to visualise manorial documents in Dorset interactively.

Very cool to find a depiction of Henry VIII on a letters patent (re)founding a monastery in 1538, slap bang in the middle of the monasteries being closed!

Great to attend the 15th century conference this year at Durham. Fascinating papers and what a place to have it!

It takes too many clicks to access the search of @UkNatArchives, so I created this Chrome extension, which is super handy!

Amazing to find a Newbury wooden 'bedstead' grave marker in Arlesey, Beds., 153 years on and still legible!

I can't be the only one who uses the nose to focus their phone's camera in an archive ... or unroll a document, weight it, and tell it "stay" ... surely not...

#ADoorableThursday St John the Baptist, Letton, Herefordshire. Late 11th century South door with contemporary door and ironwork. The massive red sandstone lintel has close relatives at nearby Bredwardine and Willersley, very likely all by the same hand.
