Four years ago today, one of the high points of the Pontificate of Pope Francis, was the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as Our Lady had requested at Fatima.

The reason why I'm at a crossroad with choosing between Catholicism and Orthodoxy comes down to this: Which side has the better historical connection to the Church Jesus founded in 33 AD? Which side is objectively closer to the early followers of Christ and what they believed.

“Jesus founded only ONE Church; ‘Bible alone’ created thousands.” When Christ established His Church, He prayed that His followers would be one (John 17:21). He appointed Apostles, gave them authority to teach in His name, and promised that the Holy Spirit would guide the Church into all truth. This was meant to preserve unity in faith and doctrine. For the first centuries of Christianity, believers remained united around apostolic teaching, the Eucharist, and the leadership of bishops who succeeded the Apostles. The faith was handed down within a visible Church that served as the guardian of both Scripture and Tradition. But when the Reformers in the 16th Century introduced the idea that “Bible alone” was the guiding principle, something new happened. Without a binding authority to interpret Scripture sincere believers began arriving at different and often contradictory conclusions. Over time, Christianity fragmented into thousands of denominations, all claiming the same Bible while disagreeing on essential doctrines. The issue is not the Bible itself. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. The issue is separating the Bible from the Church that wrote it, preserved it, and authoritatively interpreted it for centuries. Christ did not establish a system of endless interpretations. He founded a Church to teach with authority and maintain unity in the truth. Jesus founded one Church. Division came 1,517 years later.
