@SPTomos Latin: aurum et argentum
This happens quite a bit with the Brythonic languages, maybe reflecting the impact of Roman rule and interactions between the two? Cymry as inheritors of Rome??

@DrJaninaRamirez Late Antiquity, we love being confused on when the medieval period begins. Is it the early middle ages, or late antiquity?? Who knows?!?!

@bob70175196 @NorthAges There's this paper I read on early english runic inscriptions in saintly tombs and shrines in Rome from about the 7th or 8th century I believe, so pilgrimage to Rome from the isles seems to be certainly old!
English

@NorthAges Wow, impressive on two counts. There were a load of Pope Johns in the first millennium of the church. Ælfric Puttoc went all the way to Rome for his pallium. I wonder how many archbishops did that trip? Was a trip to Rome common from the isles at that time?
English

Ælfric Puttoc, archbishop of York, received the pallium from Pope John XIX in Rome #OTD in 1026. Ælfric seems to have been remembered for his benefactions to Beferlic (Beverley, Yorkshire). Cynesige succeeded him. ©Paul Lakin

Æthelstan, king of the English, died #OTD in 939, allowing Óláfr Guðrøðsson to take York back into Viking hands. Óláfr, as king of Dublin; Constantín II, king of Alba; and Owain, king of Strathclyde, had been defeated by Æthelstan at the Battle of Brunanburh. ©Athelstan Museum

Northumbrian rebels led by thegns Gamelbearn, Dunstan and Glonieorn stormed the York home of the absent Earl Tostig #OTD in 1065, slew his retainers and raided his treasury. It was partly in revenge for the execution of three nobles including Earl Uhtred’s son, Gospatric. ©DACP
