When my son was 8 he was an elite soccer player. In a completely non competitive participation trophy league. He'd routinely score a hat trick before half time. Then the coach would put him in goal. Of course that meant the other team wouldn't score. So they started putting him on the other team for the second half. A couple times he scored a hat trick for both teams.
And he hated it. Because he wanted to win.
Moving to place where there was more competition wasn't an option.
By the time he was 11 we'd moved on to guitar. And he became an elite guitar player.
In the US, the problem isn't the players - it's the youth leagues.

@JPBillingsgate @PauleyMo67 I’m with you. Kids are so over scheduled. Athletics are fun and supplemental but they’re not endgame. It’s a shame so many are deluded that their kid is the next Messi so instead of having fun and developing a LOVE for the game it becomes a chore.

Coaches that travel hours every weekend, run training sessions 4 days a week, deal with parents, and develop extensive macro cycle periodization plans for their teams absolutely deserve to be paid well. It is a full time job and requires extensive qualifications and labor

Extremely lazy — and common — argument. We have the luxury of wealth and a huge population in a sports obsessed country. We can — and should — be great at every sport we play in decent numbers. And millions of kids now play soccer every year. Way more 14 year olds play soccer here than in Belgium.

It’s crazy to look at how soccer is viewed in other parts of the world vs. the USA.
Most countries see soccer as a symbol of everyday working class people taking part in, while in the USA it’s all pay to play bougie class.

The reason football is the biggest sport in the world is because it’s so accessible and needs barely any equipment to play.

Geno regrets never recruiting Caitlin, so he has to keep convincing the world that the players he actually did recruit are better than her.
And btw - Caitlin has always had better stats than Paige, throughout college and the WNBA (and even in the freshman year he’s referencing)

One big US soccer thought: our youth development has to get more affordable. One of my kids plays travel. It’s at least $5k a year & this isn’t even super high end. We can afford it, thankfully, lots can’t. Youth sports costs in the US are out of control, soccer more than most.
