My neighbor is replacing their HVAC system today. Their house is slightly bigger than ours. Total cost for everything: $34,000!!!!! What in the hell? He said they have tripled in cost since COVID. What a crock of crap.

I don’t understand why every vehicle isn’t a hybrid. Why not use regenerative braking to charge a battery in every car? Huge increase in gas mileage. Why do they still make non-hybrids?

Mr. Bezos: Let's have that debate. Under my 5% billionaires wealth tax, we'd: -Give $12K to a working family of 4 -Expand Medicare for dental, vision, hearing -Guarantee universal childcare -Raise starting teacher pay to $60K And you'd still be worth $269 billion after taxes.
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

Jeff Bezos on CNBC: "If people want me to pay more billions, then let's have that debate, but don't pretend that that's gonna solve the problem. You could double the taxes I pay, and it's not gonna help that teacher in Queens.... Airbnb isn't causing high rents. What's really causing high rent is government intervention."

Today, we share a breakthrough on the planar unit distance problem, a famous open question first posed by Paul Erdős in 1946. For nearly 80 years, mathematicians believed the best possible solutions looked roughly like square grids. An OpenAI model has now disproved that belief, discovering an entirely new family of constructions that performs better. This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to a field of mathematics.

@JoeCassandra @zapatas_mom This is true but I think the twitter hate actually is jealousy. You are a top 1% parent but most parents daydream a lot about what their life would be like without kids and are constantly stressed.

@zapatas_mom Issue isnt jealousy. I travel more with my 4 kids than some childless people I know. Issue is how bad this is for society & the brainwashing of young people posts like this do A country thrives with a growing young population Not a top heavy old population

I am a childless person who actually really likes and tolerates children well (probably for being a teacher for so long), but all the parents in the comments and QTs sound genuinely bitter and jealous. If your life is fuller with kids, you don’t generally get mad at childless people have their own thing going on.. right ? So weird.

Most of the dudes I knew who graduated high school and went on to play sports at a tiny school in the middle of nowhere ended up quitting, transferring, or hating their lives. Unless you absolutely love it, or see it going somewhere, its probably a better idea to optimize the college experience around making friends, learning about yourself, and trying absolutely everything. At the very least hedge by going somewhere in a cool area or with great academics. Just an observation, but I think for most, it ends up being a brutal reckoning. Youre sitting there ripping 2 days for some boomer in rural Ohio and all your buddies are living this unstructured, enjoyable, once in a lifetime experience.

Here is a huge positive to modern life that gets no press. I have an old 2009 Toyota, and the AUX port crapped out about a year ago. Went to YouTube. Young, enthusiastic guy explains how to fix it. It is not obvious - involves taking the dashboard apart in a counter-intuitive way, but once you see it, it's a 15 minute fix. There are actually dozens of videos showing how to do this, and they collectively have well over 200k views. Had this happened in 1995, I would have just lived with it. But the combo of the replacement AUX jack available from Amazon and the video of the simple (but not obvious) fix, I fixed it. I HAVE DONE THIS DOZENS OF TIMES. Replaced the control panel of my dishwasher. Replaced the ice maker in the fridge. Fixed a wonky sanding head on my drill press. Mastered a bandsaw technique that I use for my sculpture. On and on and on... I think it is likely no exaggeration to say billions of fixes and skill upgrades have been performed worldwide that would not have been performed if it were not for the instruction freely given peer-to-peer on YouTube. Take a moment to be happy about this. The busted item keeps performing, rather than going to the landfill. The person learning and doing the fix gains a sense of mastery and saves money. It's an unmixed blessing. Stop doomscrolling. Think of what is busted in your house, find the YouTube video on how to fix it, and fix it.

Can someone explain to me why people do cosmetic yard work for 4+ hours every weekend? Wait, so the 10 seconds you see it when you leave/enter your home makes it all worth it? I just can’t think of a worse way to spend my time.

Bank manager feels she gets to decide what rights people have on a public sidewalk. She calls the police and lucky for her she got a deputy that is just as ignorant about the laws and citizens rights as she is. Deputy L. Crawford of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was the officer that responded and tries her best to violate this man's rights. The reason the call came in from the bank manager was due to concern that the man was filming from the sidewalk and capturing sensitive customer data on their monitors. The first thing Deputy Crawford did when she arrived was to immediately attempt to trespass the man and demand his identification. The man remained on the city sidewalk, which is traditionally a public forum where filming is a protected right. Florida Law (§901.151): Under "Stop and Identify" statutes, an officer cannot legally demand ID unless they have Reasonable Articulable Suspicion (RAS) that a crime is being, has been, or is about to be committed. The man argued that if the bank didn't want their screens seen, they should have moved them or used privacy film. Legally, anything visible from a public space is generally fair game for a camera. The tension peaked when the deputy noted the man was "physically shaking" as a justification for a wellness check, while the man countered by saying he gets frustrated when dealing with a bad cop referring to her being "baited" into an illegal detention. Know your rights folks, do not allow ignorance to bully you out of them. Also that bank is terrible if it has any screens facing a public window. The bank is responsible for putting people's personal info at risk. Let me know if you agree or if you have a different take.

Serious question. For 20 years, a "Software Engineer" was someone who spent thousands of hours mastering complex syntax, logic, and architecture. Now, a 19-year-old can vibe-code a production-ready SaaS in a weekend using plain English and a $20 Claude subscription. What does the title "Software Engineer" even mean right now?

Central Park is great, but it takes up a lot of space and isn’t utilized to its full potential. That’s why I worked with McKinsey on a plan to make it a state of the art data center, complemented by rooftop parking and nuclear power. We can still build beautiful things.
