I have mapped out a half dozen S&P 500 scenarios for yearend 2028, based on the 2027 earnings consensus. Granted, earnings can vary wildly from expectations, as can market psychology. If the Street gets it right on earnings, the super-bull market scenario might be something like a 2021 speculative frenzy repeat. That level would be 10,369, up from the S&P 500's current 7,105. For the bears, maybe we find a 2022 repeat; that is a close of 6,137 on December 31, 2028. If instead the market seeks out something in between, like the median price/earnings ratio of the last two decades, that would put the S&P 500 at 6,624 in 2028. Tons of dispersion here, and a reminder to have humility when it comes to markets. I hope this exhibit helps in your macro work.
