The Pacers gambled and lost. Short term - silver lining is the East is still very weak top to bottom and they’re likely a 4-5 seed if fully healthy. Long term - terrible for the future of “what could’ve been”. Getting a top 4 player in this draft sets you up for the next decade. Pacers miss out on that and will have to be inventive with moves over the next few years. Not a death sentence, but very disappointing in what might’ve been. Not going to be Mr. Conspiracy, but kind of odd that big market teams like Chicago and LA end up getting top 5 picks and a chance to stay relevant.

The Pacers were too cheap to keep Myles Turner. To rectify the mistake, they traded for Zubac. But that only compounded the mistake as it has now cost them the #5 overall pick and a future unprotected 1st.

The problem is that Pacers fans are looking at this like we lost Dybantsa or DP or Boozer or Wilson for Zubac. We didn’t. We gave up Wagler or Flemings or Burries or Acuff. Was it a lot? Yes. Will it pay off? It very well could. But at least the front office believes in the core.

Bottom line for Indiana from Zu’s biggest fan: Zubac was an all-nba level player in 24-25, his team completely fell apart the next year + he played through ankle ligament damage he suffered in December. There’s very little to take away from this season. Not a single big in the league can match versatility as both a post creator & play finisher at a legit all-defense level, while also being arguably the best rebounder & screener in the league. Gonna be winning a lot of games in the next 3-5 years.

There are a lot of dumb takes about the Zubac trade now. I would've traded Mathurin, Acuff/Wagler and whatever late round pick goes in 2029 for Zubac. A healthy Pacers team is a EC favorite next year. Most of you have never watched Zubac play.
