Israeli strikes predictably hitting Tehran residential areas. But as Iran-Iraq “war of the cities” and many Western bombing campaigns show, punishing civilians won’t cause Iran to back down. 3/It wasn’t always like that. In the early 90s, US Treasury yields started to surge as markets grew concerned about the size of deficits. The benchmark 10-year yield increased from 5.2% in late 1993 to more than 8% 12 months later. Partly in response to what came to be known as the bond market massacre, the federal government under the Clinton administration started to run small surpluses. One of Clinton’s advisers, James Carville, was so impressed with the sway of the bond market vigilantes that he famously quipped “I used to think that if there was reincarnation, I wanted to come back as the president or the pope or as a .400 baseball hitter. But now I would like to come back as the bond market. You can intimidate everybody.” In 2000, the last year the US was running surpluses, the ratio of debt to GDP was 39%.

Prof. John Mearsheimer warns that the Israelis "are in a hopeless situation. They are not going to win in Lebanon:"

"#Iran's air defense system relies on purchases from #Russia. These systems are costly, and there is currently a shortage due to the prolonged war between Russia and Ukraine, making it difficult for Moscow to quickly assist Tehran with new acquisitions." haaretz.com/israel-news/20…

@HoyasFan07 The most plausible backing Russia could give Iran is ISR support and air defense. I don’t know enough about Russian military intelligence to know if they can divert collection/analytic resources from 🇺🇦 . Find it less likely that they’d be able to spare sophisticated air defense.

@HoyasFan07 How can a country with a population of 330M and a military of 1.2 million expect to prevail in a war against a country with a population of 1.4B and a military of 2.2 million and bigger navy? Is it even possible to degrade CH's mil/infrastructure without going nuclear?
