Have you applied for SSI Disability? You can apply on his behalf (are you both in the same state?). Chronic mental illness is a covered disability, and that would come with Medicaide which would cover any hospitalization or long term care. What often happens is once they are stabilized at hospital, then they are transferred to a group living situation where he would live in a safe environment, put still part of the world.
