Good news for cancer patients: Biopsy backlogs cleared after DA intervention. Following Dr Jack Bloom MPL’s oversight visit to the Johannesburg Anatomical Pathology Laboratory last year, the severe backlog has been eliminated. At the time, there were 1,540 specimens waiting to be processed and 12,756 awaiting reporting with patients waiting up to three months for urgent results. Through outsourcing to private labs (at a cost of R12.6 million), support from other NHLS laboratories, and weekend overtime, the backlog has now been cleared. Dr Jack Bloom MPL welcomes this progress, which will help save lives by enabling faster diagnosis and treatment. However, the underlying crisis of pathologist shortages remains. 13 Gauteng hospitals running without permanent CEOs — a full-blown leadership crisis. According to a report in The Citizen, one in three public hospitals in the province currently has only an acting CEO. Pholosong Hospital has gone nearly five years without a permanent head. Other hospitals severely affected include Tembisa, Kalafong, Tambo Memorial and Sebokeng. This is another broken promise by Premier Panyaza Lesufi, who vowed five years ago that all hospital CEO posts would be filled by December 2021. Patients are paying the price with longer waiting times and deteriorating services. Acting CEOs cannot provide the stable leadership these hospitals desperately need. DA notes Minister Motsoaledi’s intervention to prevent another Esidimeni tragedy. Following urgent pressure, National Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has stepped in to protect 176 mental health patients at the Talisman Foundation in south Johannesburg. A high-level stakeholder meeting was held, and the eviction deadline of 14 May has now been suspended. No patient will be removed while sustainable solutions are found. This brings much-needed relief to vulnerable patients and their families. However, it is deeply concerning that Premier Panyaza Lesufi failed to respond to a letter sent two weeks ago by Dr Jack Bloom MPL requesting urgent provincial intervention. This silence highlights the ongoing leadership failure in the Gauteng Health Department — from the disastrous tenure of former MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko to the current appointment of MEC Faith Mazibuko.
