I earn about 11x the national average gross wage. And I take home roughly only 3x the same person on the national average wage. Tell me again how the incentives aren’t skewed to earn less and be less productive…

@ibuildthecloud Changing environment variables at runtime? I don’t think this is possible in most unixes?

I'm guessing AI is lying to me, but it's little things like this that bug me about Bun. It's just not worth it. There's not enough benefit for the small qol enhancements. (But caveaut, i'm guessing AI is wrong about this one)

I wrote a piece on building 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 using durable execution, communication, and state in @restatedev. It matches so well, it still sometimes feels too good. The approach works with popular frameworks like @aisdk and @OpenAIDevs agent SDK, or even with roll-you-own stack. It requires just a few lines to get 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻-𝗶𝗻-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, and 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶-𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, into existing agents. 👇🏼

🎉Factorio Learning Environment 0.2.0 released! 📖Details: jackhopkins.github.io/factorio-learn… New Features: - Multi-agent support - Reasoning models + MCP - Reflection & backtracking - Vision-augmented inputs and more frontier model results! The initial release of FLE was met with great enthusiasm for an AI eval as it's unbounded, open-ended and highly dynamic. Version 0.2.0 expands on these qualities and cements FLE as an ideal testing ground for frontier agents. Shoutout to Jack Hopkins, @Mbakler00, @akbirkhan and @marksaroufim 🧵 Deep-dive below!

@alexandrosM @RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc Yanukovych fled and parliament voted unanimously to remove him and restore the 2004 constitution. That’s a US funded coup? Let’s be clear - do you think it was right or wrong for Russia to invade a sovereign nation? Or perhaps do you think it’s just a special military operation

@JackKleeman @RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc You mean like we provided our support to the democratically elected government of Yanukovich that a us-funded mob ejected from power, even after he had signed a deal with the US to call early elections? Or are some democratic governments more worthy than others?

@alexandrosM @RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc I guess Russia should withdraw then! Perhaps you can pass on the message. In the meantime, if the democratically elected Ukrainian government ask for support, we should provide it. Unless perhaps you know better?

@JackKleeman @RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc I want a pink Ferrari but nobody is pulling up to my place in one. Meanwhile Ukrainian men are being violently grabbed off the streets, shoved in vans, and dumped at the front with minimal training. Spare a thought for them and their families.

You asked, I answered, you changed the subject. But let's answer the new question. Is Ukraine better off now? Is the current state preferable? Is Ukraine going to get a better deal now? And you probably think 3 Russians die for each Ukrainian. Wait till you figure out it's probably closer to the inverse. Everything is not WW2, diplomacy and strategic empathy are important features of statecraft, and arrogance you can't back up gets you in the situation we are in now. By all means, let's keep going.

@alexandrosM @RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc Great idea - let’s appease Putin and let him tell NATO what it can and can’t do… Deterrence is an emergent property of a game, and if we show weakness it could vanish. There’s plenty of countries bordering Russia with US nukes. Why’s this the red line?

Putin attempted to negotiate before the invasion. In fact, he spoke with Biden about a commitment of not putting missles in Ukraine and Biden apparently agreed but when Lavrov tried to put the deal on paper with Blinken, Blinken told him that this wasn't Russia's business. Basically inverse Cuban missile crisis. Perhaps Trump would have done the same but let's not kid ourselves that the US administration had no levers to pull. And of course there are the Istanbul negotiations that the West explicitly sabotaged.

@RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc I feel in the distribution of US responses we are in one of the most severe that could have got through congress. With Trump (yes, high variance) there’s much less severe ones that I’d price in too. If I was Putin, action under Trump is a good bet. Next stop: Karelia? Estonia?

@JackKleeman @nordic_eacc It doesn’t seem like a fantasy to say that Trump is incredibly unpredictable and that this scares adversaries. Indeed, this is precisely what many of his opponents have claimed - they’ve said he’s a wild card, he can’t be trusted to make good decisions about nukes, etc.

@RichardMCNgo @nordic_eacc But the US responded strongly and immediately to defend those countries… what would Putin have assessed about Trumps response vs Bidens that would have prevented him invading Ukraine? Boots on the ground? Nuclear strike? This feels like fantasy to me

@JackKleeman @nordic_eacc I do not think it was a coincidence that both the Ukraine War and 10/7 happened under Biden not Trump. We’ll probably never really know but of *course* evaluations of the US president are a key factor in deciding whether to attack.

@adamfc2000 @ted_pen But such a landlord would earn less than they did before the tax rise, so they’re no more incentivised to do so than they are already. The rent change I’m talking about keeps rental yields constant

@JackKleeman @ted_pen It's like how OPEC tried to fix oil prices but even with just a handful of member counties it didn't really work because eventually someone will cheat because it's in their self interest to do so.

not to be all “economist here 🙋‍♂️” but i really don’t think this is true. landlords already price right up to the maximum that someone, anyone is willing to pay. if their costs go up (e.g taxes, interest) they can’t pass it on without a shift in demand
Gordon 🇵🇸 / rent controls fan account@istreasatuatha

If you increase taxes on landlords but don't control rents, landlords will simply - and very obviously - pass those increases (and more) straight on to the tenants. Yes we need to tax landlords more, but we need to make sure it's them that actually pay.

Why does taking a base image and adding a single statically linked binary require as much infrastructure as it does? This should be a near-instantaneous operation that takes almost no work.
