@Deezus_Walks You’ve got Incredibles where it belongs. But Jungle Book is so underrated. And Nemo that low…Criminal.

Easily the best shotgun Winchester ever made - the Model 59. It was partially designed by a guy who spent time in prison for shooting a cop during the raid of his moonshine facility during prohibition. Typical shotgun origin story stuff.

@JackrabbitFans It's a real shame that the Model 40 hadn't been made just a little better, it had a real shot at being Winchester's best

Yes any gun can break and the guy with only one maybe needs it to run more than one speed of ammo…maybe guys like that aren’t as numerous as I might think. The stock seems to lack enough length in the grip for me despite not having large hands. Based on this exchange I’ll revisit next time i see one, but in my hands I’d rather have really any of my initial list. Thanks for the responses I enjoy your work and agree that long recoil rules.

It'll break if you put loads hotter than it was ever intended for through it or put it together wrong. That's true of everything, though. Avoid pissing hot loads (most of which didn't even exist when it was made, and none of which make sense to shoot in a gun so light) and don't put the gun together incorrectly and it holds up great. Bonus points if you replace the recoil spring when you're supposed to rather than ignore that until the gun starts beating itself up. It does balance to the rear, but that makes for a gun that's quick to point without being hard to move slowly (compare to the AR-17, which is just too light in the rear for some things) The stock shape is fine, at least as good as any of the other stocks Winchester made. The Model 40 may edge it out in that department though. One size needn't fit all, though, and there's so much real estate on the 50/59 stock that you can shape it however you'd want.

I respect your opinions, I own mostly Browning shotguns, but let’s tap the brakes a bit here. The 59 isn’t great. Its balance is off because it’s light in the front, prone to breaking (at least as much and probably more than an Sx-1) and suffers from the same lousy stock shape as the 50. Which in my experience, makes it more difficult to control than it needs to be.

Winchester didn't really make the 101 or 23, the 12 isn't even better than the 870, the 21 is a brick, the SX1 ruined Winchester financially (and they also tend to be fragile and aren't all that reliable, especially as the company went under), the 50 is too heavy for what it is (which is why the 59 is so great, it's everything good about the 50 but not a boat anchor), even suggesting the 37 is a joke.

"Following his retirement from baseball, Ted Williams signed a six-figure deal with Sears, Roebuck and Co. to create a line of hunting shotguns and outdoor gear. Shortly after, he was hired to be a product development manager who would provide insight and advice for product development on outdoor products. Williams’s vast experiences in the outdoors hunting and fishing were compiled and published into a series of how-to pamphlets, including tips on bird hunting. For pheasants, he recommended a rather unorthodox approach: “For pheasant hunting, try tying little sleigh bells to a heavy chord and then tying the chord from one hunter’s belt to the other. As the bells rub against the top of the cover, the ringnecks will simply erupt. They can’t stand the noise that close.”

@Jimfrombaseball He was a hell of duck hunter too. Hunted over near Hazen Arkansas. You could tell when the ducks were there. The Red Sox jet was parked at the Stuttgart airport.
