While others were bathing in @timatkin glory, my farming family from Leipoldville took 1st Prize at the Swartland Agri Show's Poultry Division for this magnificent hen, Koekoe. She was the only 100pter. Full report to follow. @bigbigjoe1

@JohannBiermann1 When you say chicken (mixed) what does it include? I think a chicken sosatie (woolies) will be a great one to track separately, it there was an index tracking fund following the price of that it would outperform the market by 200x

I'm in the process of building a Braai Index. I'm tracking the following goods: > Firestarter > Wood > Braaibroodjie > Lamb loin chops > Wors > Chicken (mixed) Am I missing any other core braai goods? Results will be published here: jbiermann.substack.com

@emilejoubert 2b. On red they drink a lot of Cab & Pinot. 2/3 of a shop. Their Cabs are very fruity / jammy and they love it. Easy sell $25 + Very little Shiraz in the shops. Bordeaux blends from France & Rioja from Spain, Arg for Malbec.

@emilejoubert I have been wondering about that a lot. I observed a couple of things: 1. Size, there are importers on that bring in SA but only some distribute to the bigger chains. Through Broadbent we get A.A. Badenhorst at Wholefoods and Vilafonte at Costco.

Lotsa focus from South African wine on USA now that 30% tarrifs loom, courtesy of The Donald. Thing is, how is it that SA - 35yrs after sanctions ended - sees only 6% of its wine exports go to America, world's most valuable market? 6%.

@emilejoubert 2. Palate, even though we are well known for our Chenin, I don’t think it’s well known in the US. most white that you see in the shop is Sauv Blanc and Chardonnay. Their go to for SB is NZ and Chardonnay is themselves and France.

@JohannBiermann1 I think the one is vastly more over priced than the other. What’s a decent P/E for a car manufacturer specially if your sales is going down like a homesick mole?

@mbalimcdust So there will have to be some kind of criteria or controls. Else a child from poverty will 3 months later be exactly where he/she was the day before the money got paid. People (family) will descend on that child with stories, demands, “opportunities” etc

Suppose the South African government started a fund that said a portion of our fiscus would go into it for the next 10 years. After that 10 years, every child born would get an account with a basic amount of money. That money would accrue interest until they were 18, at which time they could use it to buy a car, go to a tertiary institution, travel, reinvest it, put a deposit on a property, etc. A #FutureFund, if you will Yes, some may use it irresponsibly, but many wouldn’t. Once it became a cultural norm in society, most kids would grow up knowing they had a boost to start off their adult lives and plan accordingly. This would be for everybody. The question is, would you agree to that today, whether you have a child or not or plan to, or that your children may be too old for them to benefit from it because they will be past 18? I ask because I've been thinking that if we feel that we can't fix the things that caused past injustices totally or fast enough in our country, could we all sacrifice our chance at that to give a new generation “more” of a clean slate to start off with?

@mbalimcdust That sounds kind of like a sovereign wealth fund. I could agree, just a couple of things to think about: 1. Maturity greatly vary between men and women at age 18. 2. Also the top 10% will gain vastly more, that money will be just like a bonus. So invest vs desperate needs.

One of the better Spanish Tempranillos that I’ve had recently. Dark cherry flavors with plenty of well-integrated oak giving coffee and chocolate notes that linger on a long, pleasant finish.

So what? We like to tell simple stories: good vs. evil, right vs. wrong. But these are mostly to protect our ego. Life is messy. It's complicated. We're all capable of doing the right thing, and screwing up. And in fact, research shows that those who don't believe they'd ever go down the wrong path...are the most susceptible to do so. My whistleblowing journey sucked. It was hard. I did not benefit from it. But...it made me who I am. It shaped how I see success and failure. It gave me empathy & understanding for others. And it allowed me to make sense of who I am and what truly matters. These lessons are excerpted from my new book WIN THE INSIDE GAME. It just came out today. It's not about whistleblowing. Though that sets the stage. It's about how do we handle the tough stuff in life, how do we deal with the messiness. It's about coming through in the clutch. It’s finding the courage to do the right thing. It’s rising to the occasion when the pressure is on. It's striving for success...without that success making us miserable. If these lessons or my story resonated, please check out the book. It's on sale now: amzn.to/4aNlx85

Braaibroodjie Index Update: The last one for the year! The Index declined by another -1.3% in November, which means that since the end of June '24, the price of a braaibroodjie has declined by -3.5%! The main price drivers this month was the lower Onion and Cheddar price. Tomatoes were also lower. Since the start of the year, the price of a braaibroodjie has rose by +2.6%, while inflation was +2.9% and food inflation +1.6%. Both the reported prices of Onions and Cheddar has seen declines since the start of the year, while the rest of the Index saw price increases. PS I'm looking to partner the Braaibroodjie Index with a braai related brand in the new year, if you're interested or know of some who would be, let me know 🔥
