Once again, this is why Rocketman is the GOAT of music biopics. Most of the musical scenes aren’t recreations of music videos or real-life performances, but rather fully stylized, imaginative sequences that reflect Elton John’s emotions, memories, and inner struggles. His songs are used as storytelling devices, not just checkpoints in his career. The only real recreation is the “I’m Still Standing” music video at the end and even that pays off beautifully as the film’s final note, turning into a moment of catharsis and celebration that the movie has been building up to, rather than just a surface-level recreation for nostalgia’s sake. Also, it cost just $40 million to make. It’s simple, it’s effective, you just need a clear creative vision and the willingness to tell the story in a bold, imaginative way that goes beyond the usual formulaic biopic structure.

george@georgiem2000

my thing about this movie is why do they have to recreate his magic when i can open youtube and watch like 20 of the greatest music videos of all time and that didnt have a budget of $200 million

After watching musician biopics like Better Man and Rocketman, I could never look at most other biopics similar to them the same way again. People always complain that superhero movies feel repetitive and formulaic, but honestly, I have that issue even more with biopics, especially lately. Musician biopics especially could be far more creative and those two prove it.

I honestly don’t see a proper way to salvage this. Releasing it early on streaming is reactionary and ruins their planned marketing campaign (they’ve undoubtedly already sunk costs into trailers and posters and other ads that are now moot). Releasing it in theaters now that millions have seen it for free becomes incredibly risky. Only a small portion of those people—under 10% I’d wager—will actually head to the theaters to see the film again once the hype of watching a taboo leak dies down. Even if “successful,” the damage is done, and the film will only earn a fraction of what it might have previously. Releasing it as originally planned in October, going through with their advertising campaign (and ignoring the leak altogether), is a surefire way for this to bomb extraordinarily. The film is very easy to find for free, and leaks and spoilers are everywhere. Very few ATLA fans (those not terminally online anyway) will have patience to wait. This will not draw people to Paramount+ 6 months post-leak, and if they’re hedging this franchise as an anchor for people, it’s not enough. The best recourse at this stage, outside of these three options, is to fast-track Seven Havens. Give people a reason to subscribe to your platform for longer than a month.
