For today’s #FridayHoops, let’s talk about what truly separates good defensive teams from great ones. Great defense is built on communication, where every player is engaged and talking through screens, switches, and matchups. It’s about forcing one-shot possessions and eliminating second chances on the glass. It also requires strong closeouts—under control, disciplined, and ready to contest without getting beaten off the dribble. Most importantly, it comes down to help rotation discipline, where five players are connected and moving as one unit, always in position to support each other. When a team consistently executes these details, defense stops being reactive and becomes controlling. As a former ACC and SEC Championship–winning NCAA basketball coach, I can tell you that elite defense is the foundation of winning basketball at every level. For today’s #FromTheBenchWednesday, let’s break down what actually makes a good shot in basketball. It’s not just about making it—it’s about taking the best shot. A quality shot checks five boxes: it’s open, taken in rhythm, within the offense, not everyone is the right shooter, and with good balance. When those elements are present, your odds go way up—and more importantly, your team stays consistent and efficient. As a former ACC and SEC Championship–winning NCAA basketball coach, I’ve seen how disciplined shot selection separates good teams from great ones. The best players don’t just look for any shot—they hunt the right shot. Fresh off the court—#MondayHoops is here. A new episode of my podcast, “Courtside With Coach J-Ride,” is live. In this episode, “1-ON-1 with FSU Hoops Assistant Coach and GM Michael Fly,” I’m joined by Michael Fly, assistant head coach and general manager of the Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball program. We discuss coaching staffs and how they are built.  Here we are highlighting a great throwback moment—from chasing cheap tacos to building a powerhouse staff filled with grinders who’ve gone on to do big things across the game and beyond. From GA days to leadership roles, it’s a real look at how relationships, work ethic, and the right people make this business special. Because when your staff is that tight, work doesn’t feel like work—and that’s why we love it. Don’t miss out! Tune in on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and iHeart Media Podcasts. For today’s #FridayHoops, let’s clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about coaching at the D1 level. Myth: D1 coaches just focus on X’s and O’s. Reality: While strategy and schematics matter, the job goes far beyond drawing up plays. At the highest level, coaching is just as much about player development, managing personalities, building trust, and making split-second, high-pressure decisions that can define entire seasons. It’s about knowing when to push, when to pull back, how to develop individual skill sets within a team system, and how to prepare athletes to execute when everything is on the line. The X’s and O’s are only one layer of a much deeper responsibility. As a former ACC and SEC Championship–winning NCAA basketball coach, I can tell you the real separation at this level comes from leadership, preparation, and the ability to develop people just as much as players. For today’s #FromTheBenchWednesday, we’re breaking down the top surprise teams from March Madness—programs that pulled together exceeded expectations gaining victories when others thought impossible. High Point Panthers showed grit and discipline beyond their seeding, the Iowa Hawkeyes brought offensive firepower and resilience, the Tennessee Volunteers leaned into their defensive identity and toughness; the Texas Longhorns displayed depth and composure in big moments, and the VCU Rams once again reminded everyone how dangerous a well-coached, high-pressure team can be in March. Each of these teams found ways to disrupt narratives and outperform projections, which is exactly what makes this tournament so compelling year after year. Who were your biggest surprise teams this March? Which programs exceeded your expectations or made a run you didn’t see coming? For today’s #WisdomFromTheBenchMonday, from a coach’s eye, what truly changes the game always comes down to five key factors: defensive stops, momentum swings, late-game decision-making, turnover battles, and shot selection. The teams that consistently win are the ones that don’t just recognize these moments—they control them, especially when pressure is highest and possessions matter most. As a former ACC and SEC Championship–winning NCAA basketball coach, I can tell you this is where games are separated. Not in highlight plays, but in the discipline of every single possession and the ability to execute when it matters most. Which of these do you think is the most overlooked factor in winning close games? Follow me for more breakdowns on X’s & O’s, basketball IQ, and real coaching insights you won’t get in box scores. #WisdomFromTheBench #BasketballIQ #CoachingInsights #XandOs #HoopsAnalysis #GameStrategy #BasketballCoach #WinningBasketball #SportsIQ #GameManagement #NCAA #JacobRidenhour #CourtsideWithCoachJRide

For today’s #FridayHoops, one thing I always emphasize with young players is that growth in basketball comes down to mastering the basics and stacking the right habits. Fundamentals are everything—at every level of basketball, they’re what keep you reliable when the game speeds up and the pressure rises. Basketball IQ is just as important, because knowing how to read the floor, understand spacing, and make the right decision in real time separates players who just run plays from players who actually make plays.  And then there’s coachability—being able to take feedback, step out of your comfort zone, and stay open to learning is often the fastest path to real improvement. As a former ACC and SEC Championship–winning NCAA basketball coach, I’ve seen firsthand that talent alone is never enough; the players who succeed long-term are the ones who commit to these three areas every single day. If you were mentoring a young player today, which of these three do you think is hardest to master—and why? Today’s #MondayMatchup between the Michigan Wolverines and the Arizona Wildcats is a perfect example of how a team can dominate on both ends when a star player takes over. In this clip, I break down Michigan Wolverines' Aday Mara’s monster performance—26 points, 9 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks—and show how he controlled the paint, finished at the rim, and threw down lobs for Elliott Cadeau. From setting the tone on defense to crashing the glass and punishing Arizona’s bigs, Mara played like a complete game-changer. Want to see the game like a coach? Fresh off the court—#FridayHoops is here. In this clip, I break down Arizona Wildcat's Koa Peat and his breakout game against the defending champs, the Florida Gators men's basketball. Peat is back to playing at this level and will need to deliver a similar performance in Indy. From attacking off the dribble and knocking down jumpers to protecting the rim against Florida’s front line, Peat showed he can impact the game on both ends. What really stands out is his explosiveness—his ability to shift momentum with rim rattling, highlight dunks and high-energy plays. With his toughness rooted in a football family background and elite athleticism, he’s a difference-maker who could be the key to the Arizona Wildcats cutting down the nets in Indianapolis at the Final Four. Today’s #MondayMatchup play from the Elite 8 matchup with the UConn Huskies and the Duke Blue Devils is a great example of how games aren’t just won by talent—but by decision-making in the final moments. In this clip, I break down the crucial late-game possession with under 10 seconds left in regulation—where the priority should’ve been simple: secure the inbounds pass, get fouled, and let your best free-throw shooters close it out. Instead, a series of rushed decisions, missed opportunities, and lack of composure turned a controllable situation into a costly turnover. From inbound strategy to player positioning and late-game awareness, this is where fundamentals separate the good from the great. Freshman moments. Clutch time pressure. And the importance of basketball IQ when it matters most.Want to see the game like a coach?
