South African Tax. The tax system is progressive. This means when you earn more you don’t pay tax on the new full amount but rather only on the portion that falls into the next tax bracket above. Example: If my salary is R245,100 I pay 18% tax on anything below that amount. 18% of R245,100 = R44,118. (Minus rebates (left out for example). ————- If I earn R245,200. I will only pay 26% on the R100 that is above the R245,100. ( R245,200-R245.100) = R100. That means the first R245,100 is still taxed at 18%, and only the R100 remaining is then taxed at 26%. That means I pay R44,118 + R26 in total tax on my R245,200 salary. Total tax = R44,144 My effective tax basically is still 18,003%, even though technically my salary seems to be in the 26% bracket. ———- You only pay higher taxes on any additional income that is above the upper bound of the previous tax bracket.
