I have read Pyramid of Success by Wooden and Carolina Way by Dean Smith. I haven’t read anything by Pete Newell, but I obviously admire the relationships he was able to form with his players. Pitino is and always has been a stricter, more in-your-face coach than those guys. I’ve watched the guy for 20ish years now, I’ve talked at length on podcasts with his former players (my personal favorite, the engine of his Louisville championship team @TheRussdiculous) about how Pitino’s coaching resonated with them, and the relationship-forging he was able to build with them, I’ve talked with former assistants, and I’ve weighed empirical evidence of his on-court results. I think he’s the best to ever do it, and I don’t think it’s silly to say so.

It's always a good idea for the coach to have a goal with every interaction they have with their players. Whatever Pitino wants from his player, do you think this is the **best** way to get him to change the way he's playing?

St. John’s is up 20-3, and Northern Iowa just had to call a timeout to avoid a 5-second call on the inbounds. Camera immediately panned to Rick Pitino after the timeout, and he was absolutely dog cussing one of his guards. The greatest to ever do it.

Only coach to win a championship at two different schools. Also the only coach to take 6 schools to the tourney. Arguably the best culture-setter ever. I’ll back the guy that’s done a better job than anyone else at reaching the pinnacle of the sport over bballbreakdown. 👍
