The damaging of a Christian religious symbol by an IDF soldier in southern Lebanon is grave and disgraceful. I commend the IDF for its statement, for condemning the incident, and for conducting an investigation into the matter. I’m confident that the necessary strict measures will be taken against whoever carried out this ugly act. This shameful action is completely contrary to our values. Israel is a country that respects the different religions and their sacred symbols, and upholds tolerance and respect among faiths. We apologize for this incident and to every Christian whose feelings were hurt.

I have met Jews who really hate Christ, given that Christians persecuted them for centuries, and that worshipping Jesus is an abomination according to the Jewish understanding of scripture. But do you know who else I’ve seen? Christians who hate Jews, Baptists who hate Pentecostals, Muslims who hate Christians, and Christians who hate Muslims. This overreaction to an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus has nothing to do with Jesus and everything to do with hatred of Jews. First, whether it’s this soldier’s action or what happened to churches and crosses across Syria last month at the hands of Muslims, none of this affects who Jesus is. Only people who believe in a weak God feel the need to defend Him in that way. Second, I can't understand the audacity of some Christians who are quick to attack Jews in general because a religious person spat on a Christian missionary in the streets of Jerusalem or because a soldier smashed a statue. Are you serious? Do you have any idea what the Church did to Jews for centuries? Third, when I criticize Muslims for destroying churches or Christian symbols, I don’t do it because I’m concerned about Jesus’ “feelings.” I do it because those actions reflect how Christians actually live in the Islamic countries. But when an Israeli soldier smashes a statue or a religious Jew spits on a missionary, that does not reflect how Christians live in Israel, where they have full rights, including Jews who convert to Christianity. I’ve known Protestants who view Catholic statues as idols worthy of destruction, just as the prophets did in the Old Testament. So when a Jewish soldier, who also sees such statues as idolatry, acts accordingly, what exactly is the point being made? If you truly love Christ, you would know this does not define anything. What matters is how your Christian brothers and sisters actually live, not what one individual does. If you truly care about Christians, then look at what is happening to them in Nigeria, in Syria, and across the Islamic world, before you get outraged over a statue that neither adds to nor takes away from who Christ is.
