“Representative @RepRileyMoore of West Virginia is one of several U.S. congressmen who have falsely claimed that there is a Christian genocide happening in Nigeria. Analysts say that the situation in the country is much more complex and that Nigerians of many faiths have been killed. Much of the violence, they say, is fueled by criminals, rather than religious or ethnic tensions.” – New York Times

STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE PRESIDENT TINUBU: WE’LL OVERCOME TERRORISM, BANDITRY President Bola Tinubu on Monday declared that Nigeria will defeat terrorism and banditry, describing the security threats as “unacceptable” and alien to the nation’s core values. Declaring open the Second National Economic Council (NEC) Conference at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, President Tinubu assured Nigerians of his administration’s resolve to strengthen the country’s security forces and restore peace across affected communities. “I promise you here that I’ll play my part. Seven zones of mechanisation are coming. I promise Nigerians that this will be delivered, and I am here again to further find ways to strengthen our security forces and defeat terrorism. “That, I promise you, is what has kept all of us sleepless at night, but I assure you we will win with determination and resilience. We will overcome this unacceptable terrorism and banditry. It’s not part of our culture. It’s foreign to us,” he said. The President described insecurity as an economic hindrance, stressing that all hands must be on deck to find an immediate solution. He particularly commended the governors of Borno, Katsina and Kaduna states, as well as others, for doing “so much to defend our freedom, liberty and our commonwealth,” he added. Welcoming state governors, ministers, members of the National Assembly, development partners and private sector leaders to the two-day conference themed “Delivering Inclusive Growth and Sustainable National Development: The Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030,” President Tinubu described the gathering as a reflection of collective dedication to national progress. He praised the National Economic Council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, for sustaining a vital platform for policy coordination and strategic dialogue. “I am pleased to address the second edition of the National Economic Council Conference at a critical moment in Nigeria’s development journey. NEC remains a cornerstone of fiscal federalism and economic governance in our country,” he said. Highlighting the key achievements of his administration thus far, President Tinubu said the economic reforms undertaken since inception have helped stabilise the economy and restore confidence. “I must say again at this juncture, the monetary policy that we have embarked on since the reforms has yielded positive results and gained recognition around the world,” he noted. He commended the Central Bank of Nigeria under Governor Yemi Cardoso for restoring confidence in Nigeria’s monetary policy. President Tinubu said state and local governments now receive increased, more predictable federal allocations, enhancing their capacity to pay salaries, invest in infrastructure, and deliver social services. He added that infrastructure development across transportation, power, digital connectivity, housing and irrigation has been prioritised. The President also highlighted expanded social investment and human capital programmes targeting vulnerable households, youth, women and small businesses, alongside grassroots-focused initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda. “The Renewed Hope Ward Development Project further demonstrates our commitment to grassroots inclusion through a bottom-up approach to national development. “These successes reflect strong collaboration among the federal and state governments, development partners and the private sector,” he said. In the Renewed Hope National Development Plan 2026–2030, President Tinubu explained that it represents the next phase of Nigeria’s national journey, anchored in inclusive, resilient, and environmentally sustainable growth. “The Plan prioritises economic diversification and productivity; human capital development; subnational competitiveness based on comparative advantage; private sector-led growth; and climate resilience. “Its success will depend largely on effective implementation at the state and local government levels, making NEC central to aligning national priorities with subnational realities. “This Conference has reinforced collaboration, shared accountability and a focus on practical solutions and measurable outcomes. “We must move decisively from declarations to implementation through data-driven decision-making, peer learning among states and innovative financing models,” he said. President Tinubu told the conference that while the task before the nation is challenging, the opportunity is historic. He expressed confidence that resolutions from the conference would advance agricultural diversification, including dairy farming, livestock investment and ranching. Dear Congressman Riley Moore @RepRileyMoore , I write to express my deep appreciation for your steadfast commitment to addressing the severe persecution of Christians in Nigeria. Your introduction of H.Res.866, advocacy for Nigeria's designation as a Country of Particular Concern, and recent engagements—including meetings with officials, visits to Benue and Plateau States, and discussions with survivors, church leaders, and displaced persons—show genuine leadership. Your work, alongside President Trump's actions, has brought vital global attention to the suffering of Christians and others targeted for their faith or refusal to join in violence. Your tweet about travels to Nigeria and high-level meetings reflects a commendable effort to understand the rampant violence. However, Nigeria has reached an unworkable impasse. Without urgent action—specifically, calling for a referendum to let Nigerians decide whether to remain united or separate—the country risks total collapse. In just 10 years, the map of Nigeria could be redrawn entirely, with Christians wiped out from many states, overrun by Islamist terrorists, primarily of Fulani extraction, who seek to conquer the land from north to south. What you witnessed during your visits is only the tip of the iceberg. These trips are often stage-managed, limiting exposure to the full horror: daily massacres—like the recent 60 killed in Taraba and 162 in Kwara in February 2026—many unreported due to government influence over media. The reality is far grimmer—an open-air abattoir where terrorists, driven by fundamentalist ideology, relentlessly target Christians and sympathetic Muslims. The government lacks the will or capacity to protect them, and current U.S.-Nigeria security agreements cannot eradicate this deep-rooted belief that Christians have no place in Nigeria. This is a pivotal moment. Please use your office to champion Nigeria's Christians by advocating a fair referendum. Empower regions like the Igbo nation—rich in oil, gas (Imo State holds over 2.3 trillion cubic tons), and talent—to thrive independently, building strong U.S. partnerships in defence and economy. You and President Trump could be remembered as the greatest saviours of Christian lives in Africa. Nigerians yearn for peace through choice, as in the USSR and Yugoslavia. Division could save lives and stabilize the region. Seize this opportunity—convince President Trump that a referendum means deliverance, not division. Christians face daily death; your voice could be their messiah. God bless your vital work. Sincerely, Dr Preacher Ojukwu

I have traveled to Nigeria and engaged in multiple high-level meetings with Nigerian officials, the Church, aid groups across the country, and IDPs, to get a better understanding of the rampant persecution of Christians in Nigeria. In my discussions, the idea of dividing the country has not come up in any serious way. Efforts to embolden separatists hurts Christians in Nigeria - especially in the North and Middle Belt. A destabilized Nigeria would embolden terrorists and make Christians less safe in Nigeria and across the continent. I remain committed to working to save the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ - and for that matter, all Nigerians - suffering from the instability wrought by terrorists throughout Nigeria. The US and Nigeria have just entered into a security cooperation agreement, and that is an important step in tackling the violence in Nigeria and deepening and strengthening the bilateral relationship between our great nations. God bless you all.

I spoke with newsmen here in Ankara to make it clear that President Tinubu’s visit to Turkey is not just another trip, it is a strategic state visit focused on boosting our security capacity, attracting investment, and building industrial partnerships that will bring direct benefits back home for Nigerians. 🇳🇬🇹🇷 This move builds on our recent diplomatic gains and is about what truly matters: safer communities, more jobs, stronger economic growth, and better opportunities for our people. The programme kicks off today. We will keep Nigerians updated 🙏

Members of the House of Representatives, local government chairpersons, religious and tribal leaders, CSOs, and informal groups also participated in the dialogue. We were deeply honored by the presence of esteemed traditional rulers, including His Royal Majesty, The Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, Da Jacob Gyang Buba; His Royal Majesty, the Ona of Abaji and Chairman of the FCT Council of Chiefs, Alh. In his remarks, the Gbong Gwom Jos emphasized the importance of passing down historical knowledge and cultural antecedents to younger generations. He noted that such a move would give a better perspective towards addressing the lingering conflicts in the region. Key highlights of the event included a fireside chat with the Chief of Defence Staff, who shared deep insights into the Defence Headquarters’ non-kinetic strategies for fostering peace and cohesion in the region. Guest lectures were also delivered by the Director General of the Plateau Peace Building Agency and the GOC 3 Division of the Nigerian Army. Professor Yusuf Turaki, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of CONAECDA, delivered a keynote address emphasizing the role of inclusive engagement in building resilient communities. The summit featured a robust panel discussion that brought together voices from diverse sectors, highlighting the region's shared challenges and collective aspirations. A special event moment was a performance by celebrated artist and Technical Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Entertainment and Community Outreach, Innocent "2Baba" Idibia, whose music passionately conveyed messages of love, peace, and unity. We also held a multiethnic and multifaith town hall meeting, which served as a platform for honest, open dialogue. Representatives from different interest groups discussed the region's persistent security challenges and proposed practical solutions. The interaction reaffirmed the importance of inclusive dialogue in tackling insecurity and rebuilding community trust. The North Central Peace Summit was not just a gathering - it was a significant step towards strengthening our collective resolve to restore peace and promote unity in the North Central zone of Nigeria. @woye1 @HQNigerianArmy @NOA_Nigeria @officialABAT @Asovillanews_
