@s8mb There's a tipping point where you just keep your money in another currency, converting to the local only when you need to make a purchase that minute that won't take the alternative (I remember people doing this in Romania in the early 2000s, there were exchanges in stores)

Oh for Tegel and its regional bus stop aesthetic. Despite its flaws, that place at least functioned efficiently.

I am at London City Airport. It took me 15 mins from arriving on the DLR to being seated at the gate. This is what air travel should be like everywhere!

I've just seen the UK described as a swamp in response to a story about a homeowner's persistent damp issue and it feels so accurate. We live on a swamp and it makes so much sense.

Trainline calls for 'rail reform' as it finds passengers are missing out on more than £80m per year in delay compensation because of “unacceptable” claims processes 🚆😮 @AnnaJonesSky and @KamaliMelbourne have today's top stories in 10 minutes. 🎧 trib.al/mVL6Hx3

It continues to be the case that one of the best things the UK could do is build a metro in Leeds.

@theashrb @Dr_AlexDavidson It’s become the busiest because the elizabeth line is included, that’s diverted passengers away from the main concourse. It needs some minor accessibility improvements, not this.

@Dr_AlexDavidson They kind of need to though, the station is now the UK’s busiest and is bursting at the seams most days due to overcrowding.

Btw, has anyone seen the new proposed plans for London Liverpool Street Station? 👀 It will be beneath an office complex, and you’ll be able to see all the trains from the Exchange Sq end.

@Discoplomacy @_brianpotter 2nd that. One of my fave bits to econ history and a great essay. You can be a good capitalist and make the right market-incentivised decision at each junction, and destroy your industry in a few decades when faced with competitors with a vision, patience and government backing.

As always, complex causes: (un)wise decisions, unions, fear, lack of innovation, global boom & busts, political treaties, failure to grasp urgency of issue, competing powers using new models and so on. Really recommend reading this @_brianpotter essay! open.substack.com/pub/constructi…

This is a brilliant essay on the collapse of Britain’s shipbuilding industry. 1890s: UK shipbuilders delivering 80% of worldwide shipping tonnage 1914: market share now 60% 1947: 57% 1960s: 17% 1970s: 5% 1990s: 1% 2023: no commercial ships at all

@timleunig @FT If I'm understanding, almost all the dual carriageway in Germany is Autobahn, where as most of ours is not motorway - so the gap is largely down to the classification rather than actual difference (Germany 8,197 miles of autobahn, UK 7,628 miles of motorway and dual carriageway)?

@seatsixtyone I've not, steps I am guessing?! I was impressed with the Swiss Girunos, and the class 755. Don't travel as much as you, but have seen in France and Spain how much much some people were struggling with boarding and moving about, magnified when they had luggage. Level is the way

@JamesUpsher Have you been on a new generation low-floor railjet? Low-floor on entry and single-deck, but have you walked through multiple cars to reach the restaurant? What did you notice? 😁 Of course, Talgo's ICE-L is entirely low floor...

EUROSTAR GOES DOUBLE-DECK: Eurostar confirms order for 30 new double-deck trains from Alstom, similar to TGV-M, with option for 20 more, in service from May 2031. The 200m sets can run to/from London as 2 x 200m with 1,080 seats. (Another move in the Battle for Temple Mills...)

Note how realistic the visuals and voices are. This AI deepfake video of Catherine Connolly ‘withdrawing’ from presidential contest and that Friday’s poll is ‘cancelled’ is live and viral on Facebook tonight. 1000s watching, commenters believing it. We knew this would happen.

@JamesUpsher Funnily enough, TGV Duplex is almost level boarding, in that the entrance is level with the platform. Sure, there's a step down into the vestibule, but less of an issue and I'm not sure if this is eliminated on TGV-M.

@Sam_Dumitriu long thought we should have a -1 and -2 listing system for buildings that local governments would like to see replaced and will expedite though planning.

There are many buildings architects love, but normal people hate. Why not legally designate them as “Ugly” then allow the landowner to demolish and rebuild in a locally popular style (decided via visual preference surveys) at a higher density? More homes and more beauty!

📞 Good news in the neighbourhood: The brutalist Hayes North Telephone Exchange has been added to the London Borough of @Hillingdon's local list, recognising it as a building of architectural and historical significance. Designed 1964-68 and constructed in 1970-72, the exchange is an exemplar of public building works by the Property Services Agency (PSA: successor to the Ministry of Public Building and Works) and Gray Associates. It’s notable for the involvement of George Reginald Yeats, senior PSA architect, who is best known as the senior architect for the BT Tower (1961-65). The complex massing and unashamed sculptural pre-cast concrete also echoes the works of Kenzo Tange, Kisho Kurokawa and the Japanese Metabolism movement. Following a six-week public consultation by the council earlier in the year, an overwhelming 68% of respondents supported the inclusion. The council’s Cabinet requested further investigation into the buildings redevelopment potential if it was added to the list and after completing a review, it was formally approved last month. C20 Society enthusiastically supported the local listing and believes the building would be well suited to future conversion and adaptive reuse.

@albieamankona Stations improved hugely during the controversial PPP period (1999-2010). The contracts had strong incentive for improved ambiance so there were lots of refurbs and a big increase in cleaning. Post the PPP, those standards have slipped steadily, I would say.
