Thank you to Sir Julian Lewis MP, @ChelFulhamBen & @StuartAndrew for standing up for seriously ill children in yesterday’s palliative care debate. Despite some promising developments, the gov must now commit to action on workforce & funding while strengthening accountability.

The @CommonsHealthExpert Panel has published its evaluation of palliative care in England – and the findings are stark. The report reveals that inconsistent commissioning across local NHS bodies is driving a postcode lottery in children’s palliative care. bit.ly/3Mqazgy

While the £80m for children's hospices over three years is hugely welcome, further commitments are still needed to tackle the postcode lottery in children and families' access to 24/7 end of life care at home. Thanks to Sir Julian Lewis MP for raising these vital points.

While £80m over 3 years is hugely welcome, further commitments are still needed to close the £310m funding gap and address inconsistencies in local NHS and council funding. The government’s all-age palliative and end of life care delivery plan is a vital opportunity to act.

The @NAOorguk report on adult hospices is deeply concerning. But children's hospices face significant funding challenges too. Only 1/3 of their costs are covered by the state compared to 40% for the hospice sector as a whole.

Seriously ill children may be denied end-of-life care without further funding for hospices, a charity has warned. Together for Short Lives said hospices are being forced to rely on donations and funds raised from charity shops to prop up services as it called on ministers to increase ring-fenced NHS funding for children’s hospices. A new poll of 30 hospices in England found almost nine in 10 (89%) expect their costs to exceed their income this financial year.

We understand MPs’ decision to ban health professionals from raising assisted dying with under 18s. But families and palliative care services will still need guidance on holding conversations about this issue. Read our statement 👉 bit.ly/3FEH5sC
