@SandyofCthulhu Deer are a major problem in the UK in terms of density browsing, landed estates have inflated numbers and a general lack of apex predators = a big problem, coupled with grey squirrels and natural regeneration of local flora is difficult. As a vegetarian, wild venison is welcome

Every pub in Scotland (that I visited) had the same three things on the menu. 1) fish & chips 2) full English breakfast (they called it Full Scot tho) 3) venison stew Each pub also had its own few specialties like chicken “goujons” (fingers) or a burger. Now you know. They told me that there were over 70 does to every stag, because they were hunted so fiercely. Didn’t hurt the population though. Also the “red deer” is what we Americans call an elk or wapiti. Same species. Just a slightly smaller subtype.
