Calling people 'clowns' for talking about uncertainty is exactly the problem. I’ve literally said proper cold and wintry weather does not appear all that likely at the moment, explained why, and pointed out where the uncertainty still sits, that isn’t clutching at straws, it’s how forecasting works. Guidance is messy, small shifts matter, and a simple yes/no far out just isn’t realistic. This kind of reply is what makes amateur forecasters think what’s the point?, you try to be balanced and honest, and you get shouted down for not dealing in absolutes. And also.. it’s still going to be on the cold side regardless. Cold weather doesn’t only count if it delivers a BFTE. A deep cold pool to our east existing ≠ me saying it’s coming here. That’s nuance, not hype. Winter forecasting is rarely straightforward. Shouting 'it won’t happen ffs' doesn’t make it any less complex. If forecasting was as simple as your comment, we wouldn’t need weather models.

We can be sure that a deep cold pool will be pushed into Scandinavia and C/E Europe, the question is whether we get enough amplification of the high to send some of it our way. I currently think that it's unlikely but is not improbable, at least not in the first couple of days of January, I'd maybe favour the period between 8th-16th January at a potential secondary 'oomph' to the high. If we do manage to pull in a more wintry pattern that will be a bonus for the wintry weather fans. The guidance is really all over the place with how the high will evolve, although a proper retrogression and easier road to wintry conditions isn't as favoured as it was before. Never straight forward when it comes to forecasting in winter!

A failed attempt at a pressure build to our E/NE coming up in the next 2-4 days, with low pressure remaining firmly in control of the pattern. The unsettled theme is likely to continue, but there may be a chance of the zonality slowing down a bit with something drier through mid-month, but this is still in the minority of outputs. No sign of any cold and snow for the next 2 weeks. Could be a fairly mild period from 6th-12th.
