Teaching your dog to search - or ‘scent work’ … Today, I took Tink and recorded a load of scent work for Jamie Penrith’s Canine Classroom. She did brilliantly - detecting scent … under water!! But during that session, she showed me something I have never, EVER seen before - in any dog like her!! I recorded all of it. Then I immediately contacted a friend who is a BRILLIANT surgeon and a highly respected international specialist in her field. I showed her what I had seen. And we immediately agreed to record a discussion together! That discussion - which I cannot wait to have - will form part Jamie Penrith’s Canine Classroom. It will be absolutely unique. About something that no dog trainer or behaviourist has ever discussed before. I haven’t been this excited about animal behaviour for a long, long time!! The full training process for underwater scent detection will also feature as an accessible series for everyone in the classroom, as soon as it is completed!! 🤗🤗🐾

Two years ago …. And here we are. Still ignoring training. Still congratulating ourselves for increasing fines. Watch the number of dog owners contacting farmers fall through the floor as a result of bigger punishments for owning up. And the less people own up. The less farmers are compensated. And the longer injured animals suffer. But it ‘sounds’ effective. And when less people own up, less incidents will get reported. So it ‘looks’ effective. Which is all politics cares about. Looking and sounding effective. And the box has been ticked ‘dealt with’ for years to come. For an offence that is almost totally and utterly reliant upon dog owners approaching farmers to own up. How disappointingly shortsighted. Strong training. Strong management. Responsible Dog Ownership. #livestock #sheep #dogs
