If anything, the war of aggression against Iran, along with Trump’s erratic behavior, has shattered the illusion that a competent “establishment” exists in the United States: a network of experts and wiser heads embedded deep within the intelligence services, the military, and various agencies, supposedly capable of preventing apocalyptic decisions with devastating consequences for the world. There is no such thing. There are no real checks and balances. No mechanism exists to stop a clearly unstable president from single-handedly pushing the world toward destruction. It’s a deeply flawed political system that only functions well in Hollywood movies where extraterrestrial aliens attack.
