Response from Zhongjin International Hotel regarding concerns raised by one of our followers. One of the hotel’s managers has shared the following statement: Hello, how are you? I am one of the managers at Zhongjin Hotel, which you posted about a few days ago. Thank you for highlighting the issue. However, I would like to correct a few allegations that were made by the reporter. It is not only against labour law but also inhumane for anyone to work from 6am to 2am. At Zhongjin, there are five business units, namely: - The hotel, with 8-hour shifts × 3 - The restaurant, with 8-hour shifts × 1 - The casino, with 8-hour shifts × 2 (the second shift starts at 7pm to 2am) - The supermarket, with 2 × 8-hour shifts - The KTV, which is being rented out Our recruitment policy does not allow the hiring of persons under the age of 18. With regard to the concern that some workers who finish work at night are not provided with transport, the employer provides: 1. A transport allowance in their monthly salary. 2. Rest rooms for those who finish their shifts late, which employees can choose to use or not We have not been strict about allowing staff to go home even if they finish late. Staff are free to go home. Some of the staff stay as far as Mbizo, and it is not practical for them to walk home. However, all this is subject to your verification. We are willing to cover all the expenses for you to visit the hotel itself. Kindly accept my invitation to Zhongjin Hotel so that you can verify all this. I can cater for your transport, food, and accommodation.

I am greatly honoured to be one of the speakers at the University of Oxford’s Africa Conference, taking place at the Andrew Wiles Building this May. It has always been about the journalism and the people I write about, more than it has ever been about myself. It is, in truth, more about the recognition of the struggles of the people whose stories I tell in print and through my documentary films. Having been jailed for my work and confronted by retrogressive forces in politics, and even within my own profession, this moment is a clear signal to young African and Zimbabwean journalists that your work will always speak louder than the noise around you. Not disparaging others, not seeking any validation, but doing the work with courage, consistency, and integrity.

@curious_edline I already live alone as a man and will not suffer from loneliness or isolation in old age because that is my default lifestyle. Gone are the days of threatening men with loneliness in old age. We have adapted and can take care of ourselves.

This is one of the interesting stories we did last year: Discover the incredible true story of John Lee, the legendary elephant hunter who rose to become the trusted "Chief Immigration Adviser" and agent for King Mzilikazi of the Ndebele (Matabele) people. In the mid-19th century, as explorers, gold seekers, and hunters began pushing north into what is now Zimbabwe, King Mzilikazi needed a man he could trust to vet every stranger entering his kingdom. He chose John Lee. Fluent in Sindebele, Zulu, and Xhosa, Lee was granted a massive 200-square-mile estate at Mangwe, making him one of the first permanent European settlers in the region: youtu.be/3wkxYsh5EOw

Just watched your video @curious_edline 🔥💪🇿🇼. we need to deal with the “house girl / garden boy” colonial constructs for GOOD. 99.99% should NOT have and can NOT afford a Maid! It’s modern day slavery. The only way it survives is through exploitation Video here : youtu.be/WVFXQbIMIFQ?si…

How many Zimbos in the diaspora with their good jobs can afford a “maid” in the UK, US, Australia etc. Answer: not many. We are the unique population that actively imports slave labour from our home country to exploit abroad. The very definition of human trafficking. Some stories will shock you. I will die on this hill: the domestic worker paradigm is flawed and exploitative in Zimbabwe. We will NOT run away from it and change the exploitative nature of our rulers when we perpetuate the same behaviour. Most understand that the situation is nuanced and low wages and exploitative employment is rife in many other sectors in Zimbabwe. I only touched on one that’s in the homes of many. Go to the ghetto and see what “maids” earn. Chi Zanu Zanu is evident in some of the comments made on this post. One guy who regularly posts bottles of $100 whiskey on his timeline to his 100 followers argues that $50 was enough for domestic workers. 🤣. Ocean basket on cork was full of Hararians speaking 100s on prawns in a landlocked country , who all pay pittance for the people caring for their kids at home. They come on X on expensive smartphones and cry about their low wages. A lot of abnormal things happen in our nation. I pointed out just one. I can only manage my own life and my own circumstances. We throw ideas on this platform to debate and refine them and hopefully change the minds and direction of a few willing. That’s it. Next week we will discuss Teacher and those who educate our kids. Then week after that, our medical professionals.

PR weakens accountability. PR means people vote for parties, not individuals. Which can lead to citizens not knowing who to hold accountable. With the FPTP system as citizens we know whom in our communities to hold directly accountable. On the referendum point - not every reform must wait for a referendum. Constitutional systems often evolve through parliament too.

Your #CAB3 doesn't propose Proportional Representation in parliamentary elections. Those that elect presidents through parliament also elect parliamentarians through PR. Zimbabwe uses a different system. We use First Past The Post (FPTP) to elect MPs, which is completely different from what I proposed in my tweets. For me, electoral violence occurs in parliamentary elections where warlords employ massive violence in their electoral districts to force people to vote for them. Our elections are violent because they're winner-takes-all. That situation cannot be cured by parliament electing a president because the parliament itself is a result of a very violent electoral process. Change the system on how MPs are elected if the amendments envisage ending political violence. You don't fix an engine malfunction by changing a car's exhaust pipe. Go full-time PR, elect political parties, not individuals, in parliamentary elections in order to cure the violence that FPTP brings in parliamentary elections. Legitimize parliament by ensuring the process of electing parliamentarians isn't violent if you want to use parliament to elect a president. It's that simple. That was the argument I made then, it is an argument I still make today. Show me where, in your CAB3, there is a proposal to elect MPs through PR. Also show me where in my tweets I advocated for extending presidential term from 5 to 7 years? Where did I suggest to mutilate the constitution by ignoring the disability clause in section 328 (7) inorder to extend ED's term unconstitutionally? If you don't understand electoral systems don't argue on things you are not well versed in. Zimbabwe doesn't use the system South Africa uses to elect a parliament which then chooses, from within itself, a president. Don't be desperate to the extent of confusing your desire to shield ED from elections and the illegality of extending his term with calls for electoral reform. I advocated for Zimbabwe to go full-time Proportional Representation, which I still do, but I don't agree with the illegality of extending the President's term from 5 to 7 years. I also don't agree ED should violate s328(7) by presiding over his term extension. In any case, my proposal for full-time PR is a personal view, if it has to be adopted, put it to the people. Surely, you can't hold the whole of Zimbabwe at ransom because Mbizvo Jealousy Mawarire made a proposal that Zimbabwe should go PR. Mawarire is just but one exiled soul out of 17 million people. His views cannot be generalized on 17 million people without their involvement. Any proposal on changing the electoral system has to be subjected to a referendum. Don't be afraid of the people you want to govern. Go to them with CAB3, let them pass their verdict through a REFERENDUM.
