@GergelyOrosz There's a certain amount of herd mentality as well I'd say, both when hiring a lot, and when doing layoffs.

At a public company, the role of the CEO - and management - is to serve the shareholders, to one extent or the other. The company _is_ owned by shareholders. Shareholders don't want excessive spending. They don't want profitability to drop for no good reason. This is the key.

To understand why layoffs are happening at Big Tech, it's not enough to understand if a company is profitable. Microsoft's profits (net income) for 2022 was at $72B: this is above the *revenue* it had every year before 2012. Layoffs have to do with shareholder's expectations:

I once ran an online platform that grew to be used by hundreds of thousands of people. some of them chose to use it to mock and insult me endlessly. It’s pretty wild watching someone actually do the sort of petty revenge I would only joke about in my despair.

Journalists who cover Elon Musk have been suspended on Twitter tonight: @Donie O'Sullivan from CNN, Aaron Rupar and the Washington Post's @drewharwell. Rupar tells me he has "no idea" why it happened.
