AFFLICTION [1997] Directed by Paul Schrader This is an absolutely excellent drama, difficult at times, with exceptional performances. Nick Nolte was nominated for the Best Actor, and James Coburn won Best Supporting Actor. Fantastic supporting roles from Spacek and Dafoe.

Jack Clayton (#BOTD) was an unheralded trailblazer in the field of starkly adult cinema: both Room At The Top and The Innocents broke barriers in addressing adult subjects in a frank and uninhibited way. Sad that he peaked early; Clayton only made 5 other movies in a long career.

In that version the ghosts are definitely real, and the atmosphere is in-your-face Gothic.

One of the classiest horror films remains The Picture Of Dorian Grey (out today, 1945), Oscar Wilde’s supernatural look at the evils of a cruel soul. George Sanders & Angela Lansbury boost this one considerably, as does that grim painting. A haunting look at greed and destruction
