@SJUDave @51Bmo I was all in on Diop bc of his position and no one else available there. But did they actually need a true 5 like him? Prey and Freeman are bigs. Maybe find another solid 5 and then get the best wings available. Last year Prey was the tallest guy on the team.

I think Johnnie fans are obviously upset. This was the big fish. But this staff made the biggest offer, took Diop to MSG for a workout, offered him the starring role, all the bells and whistles. The Gonzaga ties from Diop’s agent clearly were too hard to break #sjubb

@SJUDave Not there yet, and they are a good matchup for the Johnnies, but I would prefer to not have to beat them 3 times. And it would put such a damper on the season to fall to them in the Elite 8. Risk reward not worth it for me.

@msloniker122217 @podoffame I agree and have been very vocal about Kershaws failings. Out of all pitchers with 100+ PS IP (31 in total), his PS to RS ERA differential (2.09) is 3x higher than then next worst guy, Greinke (0.65). It’s bad. But when judging totality of career, not 1 game, CK was much better.

Kershaw is one of my favorite players ever & I would still take Koufax. A lot of Kershaw’s advantages come from pitching 18 years to Koufax 12. The PS is the clear difference maker too. Unfortunately as great as Kershaw was in the RS, at times he was equally as bad in the playoffs. Koufax meanwhile was one of the best playoff pitchers ever.

Unfortunately, postseason was Koufax’s calling card and as you said, huge weakness for Kershaw, as he was one of the worst postseason pitchers in MLB history. Three triple crowns compared to one…..is a huge gap in favor of Koufax. Kershaw had just 1 season over 8 WAR (and it was 8.1). Koufax had two 10+ WAR seasons. Peak goes to Koufax. Kershaw has him on career regular season stats across the board. Pitched 500 more innings to boot. Give me Koufax.

@podoffame Other than Postseason, which is a big pox on Kershaw’s career, it’s not even close between Kershaw and Koufax. Kershaw led in IP (2855-2324), ERA+ (154-131), K/9 (9.6-9.3), WHIP (1.018-1.106), and of course WAR (80.9-48.9). Both had crazy peaks with 3 CYA and an MVP. Not close.

Kershaw was great, but not a chance he is the best Lefty ever. At best, he is fourth behind Grove, Randy, and Koufax. That ERA+ is phenomenal, but as you said, it’s over 2855 innings. Lefty won 9 ERA Titles. 2 Triple Crowns. Pitched extremely well in 3 WS. 3900 IP. Randy won 5 Cy Youngs. 4 ERA titles. 1 Triple Crown. A WS MVP. 4000+ strikeouts and 300 wins. Over 4000 IP Sandy won 3 Cy Youngs and 5 ERA Titles. 3 Triple Crowns. 2 WS MVPs. Kershaw won 3 Cy Youngs. 5 ERA Titles. 1 Triple Crown. Extremely rough playoff record.

Final thought: The tourney can change it all. 2023 showed that. But at the moment, this team choked away the Big Easy RS title and then got embarrassed in Big East Final. That’s their legacy at the moment. Most hollow 29-5 team you can find.

@podoffame @baseball_ref I have Kershaw 10th and Verlander 14th all time, so it’s close. But as you said, hard to overcome that ERA+.

Justin Verlander turned 43 today. General consensus is Kershaw had the greater career than Verlander, but I have never felt like that notion was a slam dunk. Kershaw's ERA and ERA+....is filthy. Hard to focus anything else after you see it. However, Verlander has: ⚾️A postseason ERA a full run lower ⚾️More Cy Young runner-up finishes ⚾️Led league in wins more times ⚾️Led league in strikeouts more times ⚾️Led league in IP more times ⚾️Has pitched over 600 more innings ⚾️Has won 43 more games ⚾️Has struck out 500 more batters Kershaw from 2011-2017 is just the ultimate peak, but career wise, I really do feel like Verlander gives him a run for his money.

@SJUDave Not sure about this year, but in the past I’ve noticed teams get distracted/thrown off by the NBA line and mostly takes 3s from there instead of the college distance.

@BenRitholtzNBA Remember this clear as day. Rose was cooking the Heat. The second LeBron switched on him he shut the faucet completely. Did the same thing in the Finals to Tony Parker. In shorts spurts, when he had to, LeBron one of the best perimeter defenders of all time.

@BenRitholtzNBA 100%. Even with Brunson going down, and them being 1/21 from at one point, if they strung together just a few makes at any point they could’ve actually won the game. It’s wild how bad Sac is.

It’s crazy but Mike Brown so clearly knows that if you can make 2 consecutive shots and stop fouling jump-shooters you can make up 20 points in a minute against this team. Thats why he’s coaching this like it’s a close game.

Knicks have to be the worst fast break finishing team in NBA history.
