Yes, lying about what you are and positioning yourself as a resource to help people while instead preying on their insecurities and convincing them to abandon their faith and families have done considerable damage to thousands of people. So once again, John Dehlin deserves every bit of what he's getting.

I think John Dehlin is being extremely nearsighted about this sort of lawsuit. It is quite common for the entity (in this case the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) to prevail in these sort of cease and desist lawsuits. His walking away just might cost him dearly with punitive damages. Especially on the request for him to make a disclaimer that he has no affiliation with the Church, nor does his opinions represent the Church. Could this be the end of Mormon Stories?

I remember the first time I came across the Mormon Stories podcast. I was trying to get active again. I was driving down a hill in Santaquin, UT headed toward the on ramp. Thought to myself “Oh! This sounds interesting.” It wasn’t long before I realized it wasn’t what I thought… I’m sure there is more that was said and discussed in mediation but ultimately, having the disclaimer isn’t a big deal. It’s actually common practice. Even active, believing members have disclaimers on their channels. Hell, even I do on my very very small channel. Refusing to do so seems to be another tactic to try and make The Church look like the big bad bully which will only seem that way to those who already think that. So the needle doesn’t move at all, imo. Peacemaking was attempted. Now it’s in laws hand. Guess we will see who wins.

So basically John is throwing a hissy fit because the church is telling him to stop using their own branding to undermine them and lead members and investigators away. They’re not telling him to delete the podcast. Just to stop lying about his affiliation. This is so pathetic.
