With the return of cooler temperatures, there will be the potential for frost formation across parts of northwest and northcentral Pennsylvania overnight. Cover up those plants and vegetables if you live in these regions! #pawx #Frost
NWS Pittsburgh@NWSPittsburgh

Any remaining light showers are expected to exit the region this evening, with partial clearing and colder temperatures tonight.

Frost/Freeze Conditions likely Overnight! Temperatures are likely to drop near or below freezing overnight across most of the area. While temperatures last night were marginal, low temperatures across the region tonight will drop into the upper 20s and low 30s in more areas, which will lead to a more widespread risk for frost/freeze potential. It is important to remember that temperature measurements are generally taken at 2 meters above ground level. Often times on clear nights, temperatures at the surface are at least a few degrees colder than just several feet above the ground. That is why it is possible to get frost formation even if the observed temperature is above freezing. Even if you are in areas where temperatures only expected to dip into the mid 30s, you should take precautions to protect sensitive vegetation. #pawx #ohwx #WVWX #mdwx

Update On The Frost/Freeze/Fog Potential Overnight: As you may have seen/heard already, there is the potential for a frost/freeze across parts of our region overnight. The National Weather Service has issued frost advisories and freeze warnings for parts of western/central Pennsylvania, eastern West Virginia, and western Maryland. At the moment, it would appear that central and northern Pennsylvania have the best chances for seeing more widespread frost/freeze conditions. While anyone currently under frost headlines should cover sensitive vegetation, there are a couple of factors that could work against a widespread frost/freeze in many areas overnight. 1. At this point, it appears that cloud cover will try to clear out across most of the area. This is important because cloud cover acts as a blanket that can hinder heat from being released back into space. If clouds were to remain in place through the night, it would hinder a more widespread frost/freeze. 2. Another factor that may help to reduce frost formation overnight is the presence of abundant moisture in the ground from the recent rainfall across our region. Moisture tends to retain heat rather well, and this could also help to reduce radiational cooling in many areas. Fog Formation: Another concern for tonight is the possibility of fog. While surface moisture may limit the frost potential, it will likely help to keep surface dewpoints higher. As air temperatures drop to near the dewpoint temperature, it is likely that fog formation will occur, especially near rivers and valleys. The bottom line is that anyone that has been placed under frost/freeze headlines should protect vegetation that could be ruined should frost/freeze conditions develop overnight. #pawx #WVWX #mdwx #fog #FrostAdvisory #freezewarning

This Day in Weather History - April 29, 2025 Ohio Valley to Central Appalachians Derecho One year ago today, a widespread damaging wind event affected parts of the region. Many may remember this event by the name "Yinzerecho" because of its significant impacts on the Pittsburgh area. During this event, widespread damaging to destructive winds occurred across a swath that extended from eastern Indiana to central Pennsylvania. While there were widespread reports of 60-80 mph winds, estimated winds up 110-120 mph occurred in Cambria County Pennsylvania. This event serves as reminder that non-tornadic winds can be just as damaging as tornadoes, and severe thunderstorm warnings should be taken seriously. We would love for you to share some memories or photos of this event with us in the comments! Check out this link for some additional information about the event. weather.gov/ctp/Thundersto… #ohwx #pawx #WVWX #DamagingWinds #Derecho

We’re building something here, and we’re looking for people who want to be part of it. CAWA isn’t just another weather page. It’s about making weather information clearer, more local, and more useful for the people who actually live here. There’s a lot that goes into that. Forecasting, field work, communication during high impact weather. You don’t need to have a perfect background. You just need to care about doing it right and helping your community. If that sounds like something you’d want to be part of, we’d like to hear from you. appalachiaweather.org/volunteer #CAWA #CentralAppalachia

The hot take that nobody asked for: The Army can provide a comfortable life. 20ish years (unless you go further) and you can be retired with pension before 40-50, depending on when you enlist. Additionally, if you’re not at a certain point in a training cycle the leave can be flexible, while also generous. 4 day passes exist, DONSA every federal holiday… By the time you retire you’ll have both benefits and a decent pension. Work on the off season and it’s just $$$ saved. No, Mason is not a recruiter. Hard mode: comment literally ANYTHING other than “I’m not dying for Israel”.

I believe that the best way to maximize the number of enjoyable chases is to aim for a high-paying, flexible job that allows you to chase whenever you like. Ideally, you can save/invest so that you can chase full time later in life without restriction. But to each their own!

If you know, you know. The Yinzerecho. One of the most memorable severe weather events our region has seen, and something a lot of us won’t forget anytime soon. We turned that moment into a design that represents both the power of the storm and the community that got through it. We’re running this as a fundraiser to help support what we’re building with CAWA. Every shirt helps us put more into forecasting, coverage, and outreach across Central Appalachia. If you want to support the mission and rep a piece of local weather history, this is a good way to do it. Grab yours here bonfire.com/yinzerecho-202… #CAWA #CentralAppalachia
