@vrexec It seems nice, but lifestyle creep, and health care costs never mind paying for kids stuff keeps people glued in. There was a study I saw, target retirement amount is ~ 2x where someone is. And the goal posts always move up.

Something I think about… There’s a lot of discourse these days about how the boomers are staying in their homes longer and how they should move out of their suburban neighborhoods and let some younger families in… I think the same argument should be made for people working corporate or financial jobs who already have a few million dollars tucked away in liquidity… These people should be quitting… Opening more seats for younger people, especially people who come from less privileged backgrounds. I was talking to a military friend this week and he told me that a significant proportion possibly even a majority of active service members are in the traditional five years and out track… So why shouldn’t a big chunk of America’s leading companies also consist of people only working say 5 to 10 years and then “sending it in” and moving onto something else like enjoy enjoying their actual lives instead of trying to make even more money for some so-called retirement that may never actually arrive? Just something to noodle over

@vrexec Americans should marry a European. Spend 20-40 working in USA. Grind and save. Move to Europe and enjoy kids and live life. Eventually open a small cafe to spend time and meet people and make some money. USA corporate life makes people die alive and become walking zombies.

It’s Thursday morning and the sun has barely risen. But you’ve been up an hour already. You got dressed quietly and tried not to wake up the baby or your wife. You get to the station and wait for the train to the city. It’s freezing cold on the platform, a bitter reminder it’s not quite summer yet. Weather app says it’ll warm up later. You hope you can loosen your tie. You’re making $700K/year. But only $250K is salary. You’re burning through your reserve all year until your cash bonus and old vested deferred comes through. You can be blown out any moment. Low level stress is your day to day baseline. You’ve got three earnings calls after 5p today. Or maybe you’ve got a pitch. Either way, you’re not seeing the wife and kids tonight. You say to yourself, “just two more good years then I’m out… will go independent… I can earn less we don’t need this lifestyle… kids will be fine… wife isn’t the high maintenance type.” Train arrives, racking and squeaking. You’ve long since developed an auditory callus to the sound. Standing room only. You’re looking for the right cushion top or bar to hold on to without invading someone’s personal space. An awkward jostling journey lies ahead. You pull up social media and start scrolling. For all its faults and discomforts, the train is your rare personal time. Before the chaos of midtown and relentless demands on your attention and effort. You see a guy you used to know years ago from another firm. He sort of disappeared. You heard he went solo and didn’t care for the money or the daily grind. Moved his family abroad. Seems like cope though. He probably just couldn’t hack it… the pressure was too much. You scroll more of his posts… he’s sitting at a cafe in Paris reading Jack London’s The Sea Wolf on a random weekday morning. How is this possible, you ask yourself. Is this guy not working? It doesn’t compute. You’re annoyed but think for awhile. It’s what you and your wife have always talked about… leaving the world of work families, performance reviews, and status games and just enjoying your days… live slower. Breathe. Just a few more years, you say. Five years, that’ll be us. Just need to buy the next house because we’re having another kid. Need stability a little bit longer. Just a little more cushion. Once I’m MD or partner I’ll have more say. I probably won’t even have to leave… I’ll negotiate more flexibility. Just ten more years and we’ll be living where we want, doing what we want. This is why we sacrifice today for a better tomorrow. That’s what this guy doesn’t understand, you tell yourself. He just doesn’t get it.

@businessbarista It's both. A lot of using AI right is telling Ai how to bound itself and that limiting is not well constructed by users.

@buccocapital Fitter is an interesting word. Busier would be apt. Being in motion for sake of motion but no clear view that busier and faster actually leads to the right destination ahead of schedule. Many will learn they optimized around slop and will have to reevaluate their status.

The 2026 World Cup is heading towards abject disastr * Poor USMNT current form * Sporting director stepping down months before event * Astronomical ticket prices * Tailgating banned * Public transportation price gouging The event was meant to showcase the global game highlighted by generational optimism about our 🇺🇸 playing on home soil and it appears to be anything but that only a few months away from kickoff

Trump really stepped in a pile of s--t with this one. It was there on the ground hidden in a way that kept the public from being aware of it, but he stepped in it, and will pay a massive price politically. His presidency is effectively over.

@jjacobs22 100%! And it starts early with get in now or it will be too late to start. Never mind kids can change their minds in a few years. Few kids have desire or are willing to do the behind the scences by themselves to come close to succeeding to get to higher levels.

The way the youth sports machine is set up is to convince every parent that “investing” in sports (clubs, tournaments, showcases, training, fancy gear, etc) is the best way to “make a living” (path to d1, scholarships, fame/fortune, etc). Instead of most kids playing sports for the reasons they are supposed to be there (learning how to be a good teammate, how to compete, how to work towards mastery, friendships, memories, confidence), everyone is chasing. Feels a bit like watching people spend all their hard earned money on scratch tickets seeking the promise of a better life. Doesn’t mean there isn’t also a place for some naturally gifted crazies to pull off and play a different game. But now the system tries to get every player and family to play that different game, which is wholly irrational and not in the best interests of most. I don’t know the answer, but the current model ain’t it.

If this scheme seems similar to Operation Eagle Claw, there's a reason for that - Iran is a very large country and our stable of helicopters hasn't changed much since 1980 (if anything it's less capable); ergo some kind of forward base is required for a SOF raid deep inside Iran.

shout out to me and my fellow situation monitors who were up late that night questioning why they’d send two c-130’s to a forward base near isfahan for a csar op. anyone with rudimentary knowledge of iran’s geography immediately knew this was a failed op and cover up.

If I was a senior in high school that didn't know what I wanted to do for a living, I'd avoid college (especially if debt is required) and just go get a good sales job. I'd network hard, learn to communicate, and study up on AI in the off-hours. I'd live at home. Keep it lean. Let the dust settle a bit. It's a volatile time, and fact is, we have to play the hand we're dealt. Thankfully, volatility often leads to the advent of new opportunities, and I'm certain the 18 year old of today will have their time to shine. Today, however, I think that taking a wait-and-see approach (while working hard) is the best course of action. It's what I would do, at least.
Moses Kagan@moseskagan

Changed my mind: I used to think it was dumb for young people to think of, and describe themselves as, generalists, bc the world tends to reward specialization. However, due to AI, the future of the economy is more uncertain now than it has been during my whole career. So I think the best move right now is to try a bunch of stuff to develop broadly useful skills, especially including applying AI to "regular" business. (Note that I'm v bullish overall; just don't know where the upsides and downsides of all the change will accrue.)

Out of 195 countries on Earth, only 9 have tap water safe enough to drink straight. (Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) In all of Asia, just one. Japan. China? Can't drink it. France? "Use caution." Japan's tap water passes 51 strict water quality standards set by the Ministry of Health. The toughest standards in the world. Enforced nationwide. The northern tip of Hokkaido. A tiny island in Okinawa. Turn the faucet, clean water comes out. On a global scale, that's nothing short of a miracle. You thought it was normal, right? That "normal" took generations of ordinary Japanese people decades to build.

Fun fact: Despite only having ~6,000 Tim Hortons locations (versus more than 19,000 Burger Kings), $QSR.to's Tim Hortons division is more than 2x more profitable. It's the cash cow of the entire company. The reason? QSR makes frozen donuts that are sold at high profits to each restaurant. It's much more lucrative than just collecting a small % of sales. It also means that there's zero chance Timmy's goes back to making donuts in-store. Too profitable to do it any other way.

This has to be one of the worst investments ever for kids. They get bored after a week and they won’t touch it ever again. As a parent I have promised not to buy this but take the kids out in nature and take them to other activities so they can explore and their brain develop more. Or maybe build other obstacles for your kids in your backyard… Life for kids was meant to be more than this playsets. Do better Kids deserve more than this thing

In Paris for the weekend. Every meal here is a masterpiece: fresh, simple, real. A random café in Paris eats 99% of US restaurants alive. But then you land back in the US and feel the energy. The ambition. The speed. Nothing compares. America is the best country in the world to build a company and the worst country in the world to eat a healthy meal. France is the best country in the world to live and the worst country in the world to be ambitious. Pick your poison.

ME: Daycare is expensive, but worth it. THEM: Why would you pay to have someone else raise your kids? ME: They're not raising my kids, they're taking care of them while we work. THEM: One of you should quit your job so you aren't handing your kids off to strangers each day. ME: They're not strangers, they're professionals. And we'd have even less money if one of us stayed at home with the kids. THEM: It shouldn't be about money, it should be about bonding with your kids. ME: Kids need bonding with more than just their parents. Their daycare teachers and other kids at daycare are some of their best friends, and they're excited to go each day. THEM: You're letting them get indoctrinated by today's education system and propaganda. ME: They're literally learning colors, the ABCs, and how to count to 10.
