A BC tenant filed a $30,000+ claim against us at the Tenancy Branch. What followed: 4 separate hearings 200+ pages of evidence 50+ hours of prep Months of stress Public attacks online Final award? $200… No penalty for the exaggerated claim. No compensation for the time wasted. No accountability for abusing the process. Bad landlords should be held accountable. No question. But tenants who abuse the system should face consequences too. BC tenancy laws need balance. Fairness cannot only go one way…

@GoodOlBillDoyle That’s the issue, it wasn’t. A 30k+ claim that results to $200 isn’t legitimate, it’s a waste of time and public resources.

@JasonBugra Why would there be arbitration if there wasn't potentially a legitimate complaint from the renter? Are you trying to start some sort of #believealllandlords movement? It won't work.

BC landlords should be allowed to charge double rent when a tenant refuses to pay and forces the landlord to go through arbitration. Right now, tenants can drag the process out while the landlord carries the mortgage, taxes, insurance, repairs, and legal costs. There needs to be a real penalty for abusing the system.

@sssrrrbbb89 You get attacked politically and online if you speak up on behalf of landlords. We just want the laws to be fair both ends.

@JasonBugra Although the renters tends to whine the loudest, the laws are stacked against landlords in BC. If a tenant is creating a verifiable headache in any form, the landlord should be well within their rights to immediately evict.

It’s not the mortgage rates that are keeping young people from buying homes, it’s the artificially inflated values that sellers think they can still get. First time home buyers are saying no. Until home values come down 30-50% there will continue to be an affordability problem.
