The major parties are making the mistake of arguing with One Nation voters instead of taking them seriously and showing them that they’ve been heard. It’s the classic mistake of politicians who rely on their bubbles and quantitative arguments to interpret the world, rather than trying to understand the qualitative experiences that make people feel the way they do. It’s the same mistake the major parties overseas have made. It will turn out the same way. The best thing they could do right now is hold community forums in the places One Nation is surging and visibly listen to what they have to say, repeating back in their own words to show they’ve understood.

More specifically: "We've got a housing crisis around the country, and if you're not doing something about supply, you're not serious. The only way we take on this challenge is to unlock supply and do it quickly." This may be relevant for the forthcoming Budget. 2/3

Australia’s most successful politician, Peter Malinauskas was asked about national policy priorities “If I pick one area of policy that requires on-going sustained effort around the country it is undoubtedly housing... For me, it’s all in on housing” 1/3

This scene in Miami Vice where "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins plays stands as one of TV's all time greatest cinematic sequences. It effortlessly establishes the mood and highlights just how far today's television industry has fallen. This authentic soul is gone.

Hoarding perfectly rational when government has deliberately only kept 30 days supply for years - a third of the global requirement. 9news.com.au/national/fuel-…

In last night's ballot, formerly Liberal-voting South Australians have more or less simply switched their vote from the Liberal Party to One Nation. That's not so much a fracturing of the right, as looking for differentiation. Now you have people who want more say in the way politics is done lining up against those who think they've got about the right amount. The small number of voters who switched their vote from Labor to One Nation confirms that theory - these aren't people switching their entire world view, as people sick of not being heard. Both major parties have come to be seen as making decisions to benefit themselves instead of the nation. The Labor Party will keep losing votes to One Nation as long as they keep on doing what they're doing. The Liberals will only be an effective challenger brand (which is what they now are) when (and if) they are able to demonstrate to the electorate that they are more effective at giving people more of a say. People are increasingly deciding that they want genuine representatives, not politicians who take care of the politics first.

Why is Australia refusing to condemn Iran for closing the Strait of Hormuz? Canada, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Finland have all signed up to condemning Iran’s actions and reaffirming freedom of navigation in the Strait. Why is Australia is totally absent?
Dave Sharma@DaveSharma

If the Labor government is serious about addressing the fuel crisis, then it should be serious about efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. So why was Australia not involved in this joint statement from allies? Did we decline? Or — perhaps worse — were we never consulted?
