@yolo_pinyato you should read the article. COL was best 5x5 team in NHL. Their top guys played more PP time than EDM. Also played more 5x5 time. But depth guys produced. Always best to use data.

@JasonGregor hard to be better at 5v5 when all of your top scorers are playing 90% of the PP time which 1. never enables any other players to step up and break out 2. directly reduces your effectiveness immediately following the PP since your bottom 6 is always lined up against their top guys

to recap, the oilers averaged 6 power plays a game from games 1-5 in 2024 cup finals and games 1-4 in 2025. in games 6-7 in 2024, and 5-6 in they got 6 PP opportunities COMBINED. its just harder to win a cup if you're so reliant on the PP to create offense.

also they did not have 30 power plays in games 1-5 in 2024. Your math is way off. They had 4.5 PP/game in Game 1-5. They went 2-3. They had 1.5 PP/game in Games 6-7. They went 1-1. PP wasn't why they won or lost. In 2025 the series was tied 2-2. Then they laid an egg on home ice in G5. They had 3 PP chances. They got smoked in G6. Suggesting they lost solely due to PP could not be more misleading.

@Realityman22 Roslovic and Podkolzin did fine. Play more at 5x5. It is outlined in article. They have went to final twice with elite PP. Losing by one goal doesn’t mean you need massive overhaul.

@JasonGregor The whole theme of this summer has been not relying on McDrai as much. If they are going anywhere they need the rest of the team confident and contributing. Also why would a bonafide top 6 player come here knowing he will get zero PP time?

Oilers first unit PP is the best in NHL history and has been for the past seven seasons. In 2026 they scored 31 goals in the first min of a PP. They scored 29 in the final minute. Reducing TOI on the PP for #97 and #29 would be a very bad idea. oilersnation.com/news/mike-babc…

@JasonGregor Ya but there’s something to be said about getting other guys involved in the game and increasing confidence in players other than the top unit. Why not develop everyone than in playoffs do what you need to do to win.

@Kylebrox @HockeyROI Podkolzin, Roslovic and Savioe all produced very well last year. If you think the 8-12 forwards will get on second unit PP I can’t help you. Also read the article since clearly you didn’t or you’d see COL and other teams had lots of guys produce without playing PP.

@JasonGregor You don't think it's drastically worse in this league and has been for years? I don't think it's a hot take. I'd also argue backup goalies / backup point guards are getting closer to starters than they ever were.

This continues to prove the point of how big of a drop off there is in this league from QB1 to QB2. CFL

@HockeyROI @Kylebrox Walman wasn't in good enough shape, so you want to reward him by playing him more. Nope. And Howard had a great year in the AHL, where he was supposed to be.

In terms of confidence I felt last year Jake and Ike could have used some last year. In previous years Hollywood for sure. We might have seen the STL version of him had he been given more of a push. Ike might be further along today too had he had more opportunities last year. Again I’m not disagreeing with your initial post, but I think there are other factors to consider too.

@Kylebrox @HockeyROI what if, what if, what if. Also which three forwards are on the second PP unit.. Podz, Savoie and who. Podz and Savoie had 19 and 18 goals last year. Who's confidence is really getting boosted? The bottom five forwards who didn't produce wouldn't be on the 2nd unit PP anyways.
