@ProfSteveKeen It was Caligula who was assassinated (the first of many). Claudius was poisoned by his wife (Nero's mother).

@garysavage1 It about a small group of oligarchs having "the best government that money can buy" (Mark Twain)

All this nonsense about "tax the rich". This has never been about bringing in more revenue for the government. Washington would just waste it anyway as they have a spending problem not an income problem.
This is and always will be about getting votes. You create envy and outrage in the middle and lower class. Blame successful people for all of their problems and those people will vote for you.
If we were to lower the federal income tax to 25% across the board. Not only would everyone get to keep more of their money, but the government would bring in a lot more money. There would be no incentive for wealthy people to spend millions of dollars on tax lawyers and accountants to find loopholes to shelter their income.
The economy would explode higher. The government would bring in a trillion more dollars. Businesses would flock to America creating millions of high paying jobs. It would without a doubt, create a new golden age.
But politicians (especially Democrats) will never agree to this because this has never been about what is best for the country. It's always been what's best for getting liberals re elected.

@DavidBCollum The story of "The Gold of Tolosa" is a perfect parallel of the current looting of the public treasury.

I am reading the history of pre-Christ Rome entitled, The Storm Before the Storm. This has bugged me for years so I asked Grok the following:
"We have an enormous amount of detailed history about ancient Rome. Was this information lost to civilization and then rediscovered or was the trail continuous without major breaks in the path?"
Grok: The trail of detailed knowledge about ancient Rome was largely continuous, without a major break where the information was entirely "lost to civilization" and then suddenly rediscovered. (Goes on to give details of various folks who kept it moving along.)

@StanphylCap Kurtz: Are my methods unsound?
Willard: I don't see any method at all, sir.

@witte_sergei Dieppe Raid (Operation Jubilee) on August 19, 1942. Allied losses 60%.

I’m going to go out on a limb with a counter-prediction, that a US ground operation would not suffer a 100% fatality rate because that’s a completely insane thing to suggest.
Alon Mizrahi@alon_mizrahi
Here is my prediction for an attempted ground invastion by the US: No American soldier will survive this adventure alive, and 80-90% of them will die at sea before they can even prepare to disembark. Donald Trump is sending thousands of Americans to a guaranteed suicide mission to please his AIPAC overlords. None of them will survive this. That's it

@carriecoon @DebunkerMimi How was the nation stupid enough to elect him again? Or did he cheat again?🤔
English

@ianbremmer How many troops might be required, where are they available, how do you move them, where do you attack, where is the logistics to support them, etc, etc. You can't just say boots on the ground as if it is a magic wand. Look at the history of amphibious warfare.

It's amazing to me that- with the amount of firepower now aligned against Iran- ANYONE thinks this can end in any way but either a COMPLETELY defanged Islamist government or, better, a NON-Islamist government.
It's facing the ENTIRE WORLD with NO allies but a lukewarm Russia!

@RealScottRitter Iran doesn't need "near weapons grade" uranium for peaceful purposes.
English

Donald Trump just said he doesn’t care what Tulsi Gabbard said regarding Iran’s nuclear capabilities and intent when she recently briefed Congress.
Donald Trump is 100% controlled by the Zionists.
Tulsi Gabbard needs to resign and speak out against this war.
She did her duty and told the truth.
Now she needs to complete her responsibility to the American people by speaking out against a war with Iran.
And the role being played by Israel in selling this war to the President.
English

@SMohyeddin @CBSSunday Of course it is sad. If Hamas had not attacked peaceful civilians on October 7 none of this would be happening.

@DavidBCollum @Jhkunstler Turn them into Japanese-style capsule hotels
English

My pal @Jhkunstler discussed the CRE bust that is already ripping along. This looks like a secular change in society. You also cannot convert office space into condos. They were built for that. (Like turning your storage shed into a garage.) He asked: what do they do with those buildings? Take them apart? Salvage them? Even in currently affluent cities this may be a serious problem.

Since 2020 We Have Seen:
1. Inflation rise above 9% for the first time in 40 years
2. Second and third largest bank collapses in US history
3. Oil prices go from -$40 to $100+ in a matter of months
4. Fastest Fed interest rate hike cycle of all time
5. Least affordable housing market in history
6. Over $8 trillion in US Federal debt borrowed
7. Mortgage demand at its lowest since 1995
8. Total US credit card debt hit a record $1 trillion
Yet, all three market indices are entering all time high territory.
Is this the most resilient market of all time?
English

@LawLiberty @davidpgoldman Presumably risk aversion is due in part at least to the high costs of health care and housing.

“More than anything else, America requires leadership that rouses our desire to create, and provides the resources to sustain it,” writes @davidpgoldman in a new piece. lawliberty.org/book-review/th…
