@z0mbaee_ @StrangerNews11 Yeah, just about all of season 5 is directionless and forgetable. A bland end to a series that I had hopes would live up to the earlier seasons.

@Walzmentum @athenaeumbc This is an interesting, if pessimistic assertion. I agree with you to some extent. Most new fiction books I have sampled are written in terse, bland prose that leaves most of the details to be filled in by the reader. Not something I will read. I stick with the classic old stuff.

They got rid of white male readers. They got rid of white male writers. So they got rid of literature. It's that simple. The fact that smartphones and social media surged just as the publishing business was purging white guys didn't help, but it's not the main factor. In the 90s, pretty much every guy with an IQ above 105 daydreamed about writing a novel, and it was cool to be seen reading trendy books. These days, I feel sorry for anyone telling me he wants to write. What's the point? There are no readers worth reaching. Nobody thinks published novelists are cool. Writing is just a solipsistic hobby at this point, and it should be discouraged. Literature is over. It won't ever be coming back.

Fewer than half of US adults read a book last year. Even fewer read an actual novel, and the trend is looking worse still for teenagers. Why is nobody talking about this??
