Justice Akinola Aguda the First Nigerian Professor of Law once resigned, on principle, as Chief Judge of the old Western Region when the Executive tried to pressure him to compromise his judicial oath. He gave an order in the historic case of Afe Babalola v The Federal Electoral Commissioner which the respondents, aided by the Executive, disobeyed. Aguda convicted one of the respondents for contempt. You should’ve seen how Adegborioye, the then Ondo State Electoral Commissioner was shivering in court under the full weight of the law. Michael Ani, the then FEDECO Chairman and even General Olusegun Obasanjo the then Head of State were not spared for shielding Adegborioye from the court-ordered arrest after he failed to appear before the court on subpoena.
