We are endowed with rights, as human beings. God did not grant inalienable rights in 1948 to a nation created by theft, murder, and deceit.

I tend to agree with you that the classy thing to do would be exactly that kind of statement. I don’t think, however, that most of the people criticizing her or pretending to be offended by the n-word or anything else she posted on Tumblr are being sincere. And it’s hard to take seriously anyone who voted for Trump thinking this is obscene.

I agree that we should dispense with cancellations, and she shouldn't offer up any fake apologies, but I don't think this sinks to the level of a cancellation.
No one is driving her from office. (There's no office from which she can be driven.) Nor are her opinions unimportant; they're about gravely important matters, and she's the most important person to the most important person in the biggest city in the country. Nor did this happen a long time ago; the most recent social-media activity took place, I believe, in late 2023. Nor are her likes and shares at odds with her new, more public persona; they're consistent with what we already knew; they're not an aberration but a confirmation along the lines of Trump's Hollywood Access tape.
It's a good thing to show some grace, to say, We're going to give her a pass. But it would also be a good thing for her to summon the moral courage to acknowledge publicly that she had alienated large swaths of her husband's constituents. That's what we would expect of a classier, less radical First Lady of New York, one who honored her role and the storied history behind it.

I’m honestly glad to see she’s not dignifying this and making some groveling public statement. We can judge adults by what they say and do in adulthood without digging through things they said as a teenager. This kind of digital cancel culture has to be put behind us.
