@greyzabelFC Jim was a notoriously hard trainer and told me he often ran three times a day.
However, I'm not sure anybody could measure their weekly mileage accurately in those days, long before GPS watches came along.

@Jason_AW There’s no way he ever actually ran 213 miles in a week lol. It’s like saying that Babe Ruth hit 600 foot home runs

Long before Sabastian Sawe's exploits in London, Jim Alder set a world best in the 'two-hour run' in Walton.
The Morpeth Harrier covered 23.6 miles in a pair of Dunlop Red Flash trainers on a cinder track and won the Commonwealth title two years later.

A fine day for British marathon men on the streets of London but the gulf between them and the world's best just got even bigger.

The sub-2hr marathon has been described as “impossible” over the years by esteemed scientists and top-class ex-athletes. They said the same about the sub-4min mile.

What a day for adidas. Its new Adizero Adios Pro 3 was worn by sub-2hr marathons Sabastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha plus women's winner Tigist Assefa.

With adidas super-shoes on his feet and dozens of negative drugs tests under his belt, Sabastian Sawe sped to 1:59:30 for the marathon in London.

They said it couldn't be done but Sabastian Sawe has smashed the two-hour barrier for the marathon in London with 1:59:30 🔥🔥🔥
Faster than Eliud Kipchoge's time trial sub-2hr from 2019 too.

In 1978 @athleticsweekly featured junior winner Mick Morton on its cover after the World Cross in Glasgow, but alongside him was relative unknown Said Aouita, who set off too fast and faded to 34th but went on to break multiple world records.

English

The last time Glasgow held a major international cross-country champs, winners included John Treacy, Grete Waitz & junior one-hit wonder Mick Morton, all played out in wet & windy weather.
Now the venue is set to stage next year's Euro Cross.

Another British-born marathon runner called Hicks making his mark after moving to the USA. Thomas Hicks was born in Birmingham 150 years ago before emigrating and winning the Olympic marathon at St. Louis in 1904, having finished second in Boston earlier in the year. Could history repeat itself with Charles Hicks at LA28?
