@Jameswise @AudreySuffolk Who made the decision to cut the funding? It smacks of it being someone as thick as the proverbial 2 short planks so can’t understand the importance of the site.

I have alot of sympathy for UKRI who have to make hard funding decisions - but whether it's from them, local funds, or philanthropic and commercial efforts Jodrell Bank and The Lovell Telescope simply must be kept both operational and supported as a home for science. The strategic case is overwhelming: The Lovell Telescope is the third-largest steerable radio dish on Earth, it does space debris & satellite tracking, satellite capability inference and provides defence from GPS-spoofing all of which are now critical defence capabilities as well as significant commercial opportunities for the UK. And beyond the immediate importance of that work, e-MERLIN gives us reciprocated access to a global research base, astronomy data to power further research and perhaps most importantly continues to inspire over 130,000 visitors & 20,000 schoolchildren a year. This can't be turned off and back on in a few years if we change our minds on scientific priorities - it's a one way ticket and I am sure there's a path to avoid what would be a huge loss on many fronts.

This is an extraordinary listen. I guarantee that @AllisonMorris1 won't reflect on the fact that reading comments on social media isn't enough to understand an argument, nor that she misrepresented women's rights campaigners. This is plain and simple criminal embezzlement. Having obtained money for a specific purpose, for which it was subsequently not required - even if it was raised in good faith at the time - your only option is to return it to donors. It is not yours to dispose of as you see fit.

Sometimes, when I remove my glasses to clean them, I realise how fucked I'd have been my entire life without them. Hard to imagine life for people with astigmatism in the Middle Ages, but I suppose they wouldn't have known any different.

@ipa1869 @trev_lisa @Glasgow_2026 @thecgf Maybe they've cut the prices closer to the time due to poor sales? Funnily enough I went to a session of the bowls at Glasgow 2014. I don't think my kids, aged 8 and 6, would be happy to sit and watch bowls for hours though!

@MandasueHeller @valhumphreys51 It scunners me we have to go through the same pantomime every year. Companies should just give a reasonable quote in the first place instead of ridiculous renewal quote, phone them up and they reduce to roughly the same as you paid the previous year.

@valhumphreys51 Loyalty used to mean something to these companies, but that’s no longer the case. Always get alternative quotes. Same with broadband, etc

@ipa1869 @trev_lisa @Glasgow_2026 @thecgf We're off on holiday to Scotland tomorrow so I was looking at tieing it in with some events on the way up, but for any sport i looked at for any session we were looking at a minimum of £200 for a family of four, so i just gave up.

@ipa1869 @trev_lisa @Glasgow_2026 @thecgf Exactly this. The prices were way too high and the discounts for children were too small. I couldn't justify the expense for my family, whereas we went to lots of events in Birmingham in 2022 and we'll be going there again in a couple of weeks for the European Athletics Champs.
