@Combatfilosof @Forbes It is certainly true that illegal gambling is undesirable but with more people engaging in legal gambling, I believe there is data showing athletes, coaches, and referees are under increasing attack. I think all will agree this is undesirable and athletes deserve protection?
English

@JasonwOsborne @Forbes Indeed, I surmised that from the article, but think the assumption is mistaken; the pressure they are under is mitigated by legal betting, instead of letting it be run unfettered. US illegal gambling is estimated to be worth $44.2bn per year, that's where pressure arises.

Sports Gambling Raises Fears College Athletes May Face Greater Risks Of Intimidation via @forbes forbes.com/sites/jasonwos…

@Combatfilosof @Forbes Athletes-college and pro- are under tremendous pressure and face many challenges. I believe the recent expansion of legal sports betting places yet one more threat they must face from those who place, and lose, wagers and who have broad access to social media.
English

@JasonwOsborne @Forbes Interesting, especially the first part. But I think the premise is wrong; 1. athletes are already under threat because sports heighten emotions (I.e pertains to the sport qua sport not to betting, but it may enhance). 2. Betting exists, it’s about finding safe legal alternatives

Of course "college" is worth it. We have known this for centuries. Education is a universal good, even when it doesn't produce specific economic benefits- which it almost always does.

@brandcritic All staff and non-union faculty get 2% raise. All faculty now subject to the collective bargaining agreement do not get a raise until the agreement is eventually finalized.... Which may be a long while and may or may not be better than that.

news about the new union representation; no raise this year.

@ask_aubry Can't you have an education AND faith, cooking skills, and a bible? Inclusion efforts at colleges means we welcome and support people of faith- or no faith- in addition to other backgrounds and identities.

It's great to see state leaders supporting these important state institutions financially. Now we need to discuss a supportive policy environment that allows us to compete effectively for faculty, staff, and students, retain accreditation, etc.

Decades of stories devaluing the humanities prompts students to focus on professional majors and salary, and this is news? It's a huge loss to our society as millions of students overlook the deep value of the humanities and arts.

Three big issues Ohio lawmakers should rethink:
1. Accreditation strongly frowns on interfering with academic freedom.
2. Students will be even harder to recruit to excellent Ohio schools
3. We are already seeing excellent faculty take flight.
