“Project Hail Mary” is bringing audiences to movie theaters in numbers the industry hasn’t seen for a non-franchise film since “Oppenheimer.” abcnews.link/zYHruDL

Something I appreciate about Project Hail Mary is finally having a movie I can take my kids to that doesn’t involve CG talking animals or minions

@fairieteeth Los Angeles! Not many here as far as I’m aware, mostly fossorial and I’m not planning on massive excavations to find them.

@samaraliwarsi Not really. The oversimplification is that in reality it’s the method of observing rather than fact of observation that changes the outcome, but it doesn’t matter in practice because *any* attempt at observation would do the same thing so it’s irrelevant.

@RealUnsweetDee Double slit experiment is a midwit filter. The mechanistic limitations of a photon detector interfering with an experimental subject has nothing to do with a human observer whatsoever

Ryan Gosling is the first name worth circling on any early Oscar ballot this year, thanks to #ProjectHailMary. Gosling’s dynamic with James Ortiz’s Rocky — equal parts humorous, tense and genuinely moving — gives the film its emotional core, providing the leading man with a scene partner who draws out some of his most spontaneous and effective acting moments. The mission, should Amazon MGM choose to accept it, is to bring this film back into the conversation come fall, return it to theaters and remind voters exactly what made it special the first time around. wp.me/pc8uak-1lH2gC

@hoomver41 @EudaimoniaEsq The Holy See recognizes Israel! The sovereign state in the eyes of the Church thus has a legal right to continue existing as all recognized states do. That does not mean there was a unique moral obligation to create it, thats a separate argument.

@EudaimoniaEsq I dont think "the zionist state has a right to exist" is really the actual Catholic position tbh. But even Bishops are afraid of the social consequences of telling the truth sometimes.

“The Catholic position on matters of ‘Zionism’…is as follows:…the modern nation of Israel does not represent the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies and hence does not stand beyond criticism.” Bishop Barron stating in plain terms what everyone with a shred of reading comprehension has been saying for weeks—for months, years, and decades, actually.
Bishop Robert Barron@BishopBarron

Over the past several weeks, Carrie Prejean Boller has complained that she was removed from the Presidential Commission on Religious Liberty because of her Catholic beliefs, and she has called out myself and other Catholic members of the commission for not defending her. This is absurd. Mrs. Prejean Boller was not dismissed for her religious convictions but rather for her behavior at a gathering of the Commission last month: browbeating witnesses, aggressively asserting her point of view, hijacking the meeting for her own political purposes. The Catholic position on matters of “Zionism,” to which I fully subscribe, is as follows: all forms of antisemitism are to be unequivocally condemned; the state of Israel has a right to exist; but the modern nation of Israel does not represent the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies and hence does not stand beyond criticism. If Mrs. Prejean Boller were dismissed for holding these beliefs, it is difficult to understand why I am still a member of the Commission. To paint herself as a victim of anti-Catholic prejudice or to claim that her religious liberty has been denied is simply preposterous.

@jassifun @AndrewParsonson The 2032 date hasn’t been officially put in law yet, and it still wouldn’t be long enough for all three unflown members of this class to make it under the normal rotation schedule!

@JamoboBorg @SketchesbyBoze Large enough moons tend to end up in the same situation as our moon because of mutual tidal forces slowing down their rotation. Planets orbiting very close to their stars experience the same phenomenon. It’s called tidal locking! So it’s not really a coincidence but a trend.

@SketchesbyBoze Also, the fact that we only see one side of the moon is another coincidence. Most moons have different rotation speeds to orbits.

Been reading a number of books on prehistory and every new fact has me reeling. Whales evolved from land mammals that spent so much time in the water they became whales. Earth might be the only planet with the right oxygen level for fire. Birds are, quite literally, dinosaurs.

I finished watching the dinosaur documentary a few days ago and I’m still not ok because what do you mean it rained for 2 million years

@Jason41875257 @AckTeacher @christopherrufo Maybe! Bottlenecks exist in the wild too. But that doesn’t decrease the efficacy of crossings in practice, plus this one is *intended* for predator use as the mountain lion and bear populations in the mountains are cut off from the wider gene pool.

California built the Golden Gate Bridge in four years. It's taken Gavin Newsom five years to build this ugly wildlife overpass to nowhere—and it's still not finished. Something has gone deeply wrong in the Golden State.
