I am proud to have been selected for Mid Ulster. I intend to work for Mid Ulster and for its future. I hope this will encourage more young people to put their names forward. Moreover, I hope to reinvigorate unionism within the constituency with renewed energy and activism.

Glad to speak on Nolan last night, and again this morning, about the QUB bilingual signage referendum. As I have said, the SU has confirmed the result is not binding on the University, only on the Union. If successful it will mean the SU has to lobby the University for Bilingual signage, which it already does. Why was this not made clear to students before they voted?

This is straight from the QUB SU policy file. The issues being put to a referendum are already SU policy, so what exactly are students being asked to vote on? To be clear SU policy is not binding on the University. Running a referendum doesn’t suddenly change that. These same commitments were brought to Student Council in January and reaffirmed. Even more frustratingly, when some of us tried to amend policy in areas covered by commissioners, we were told we’d have to wait for their advice before any changes could be made. Clear as mud!

Very, very true. I have been speaking out on this issue at Queen’s because I feel passionately that students from a PUL background should not be subjected to such marginalisation. I will continue to lead these efforts in the coming days to maximise the ‘no’ vote.

This is an issue I have been raising, really as a lone voice throughout this campaign: the rampant division it is causing on campus. It is clear to see even as a non-student (I know many there). This is an effort to mark territory by the Irish language lobby at QUB - simple!
